Transferring data to rm10 from rm7

I purchased rm10 earlier in the year and have tried on several occasions to download my back up from rm7. I have finally succeeded however there is no data in the file. The tree is totally blank in all fields. What am I doing wrong?

From RM10, try Alternate method (direct import/conversion of RM7 database):

File > Create a New RootsMagic file > Import from RootsMagic 1-7, GEDCOM, or another Program > RootsMagic Version 1-7 > Browse for File > use the file picker to navigate to your current latest .RMGC (RM7 database) file in the RM7 data folder, instead of an .RMGB (RM7 database Backup) file.

You want to Import the actual database not the backup.

Follow kbes0n directions.

My understanding – all backup files are ONLY good for the same version.
Import actual db from a previous version if you need to. I guess one could argue or expect that a backup would work but it does not.

the Help file is not clear on this

RM10 can restore an RM7 backup file. I just tried it. The result is an RM10 file. No File < New or Import or anything like that is necessary.

If you convert a RM7 file to RM10 (or 11) it will re-format the file into a new format that will not be usable again in RM7. It is important to make a copy of the RM7 file before converting it into RM10 (or 11) so you still have a file that is usable in RM7 in the event that you wish to use the older program too. Good luck.

No, the RM7 file is not altered in anyway. RM8+ imports it into the new format database that is used by the later version.

I don’t recall for sure, but I think RM9 would not alter and 8 database either. I think it began with RM10.

It does NOT change v7, only Imports, so you can still use it in v7.

The format changed when they added the DNA & Health, but again v7 still works.

Run the database tools under FIle in RM7 before you import into RM10. The RM7 database will remain, and a new file is created in RM10.
