Switching from 32-bit to 64-bit RM

I have a question about the download of 32-bit vs. 64-bit of the program. I’m on a PC with a 64-bit processor and 8 GB of RAM. Whenever I download programs or drivers, etc. I always choose the 64-bit versions in order to take advantage of the more robust processing powers. I have never had any problems with that choice. I would like to have the same use of processing power working with RM. How do I (can I?) switch over to the 64-bit version so that I don’t have these recent problems again?

To to website and select the version.

I have some recent experience switching back and forth between 32-bit RM and 64-bit RM on WIndows. As MadDog says, download and install the 64-bit version from the Web site. Doing so will not uninstall the 32-bit version. So you will have both versions installed.

I mention this because I had to take some care about things like taskbar shortcuts and desktop short cuts to be sure they pointed the 32-bit version or 64- bit version of RM that I was wanting to use. Until I got that straightened out, I sometimes found that I wanted to start the 32-bit version but really started the 64-bit version or vice versa. They both work and it’s hard to tell the difference just from using them. But in my case, there were times when I really needed to be using the 32-bit version and times when I really needed to be using the 64-bit version.

Jerry could you give me an example of when you needed the 32 vs the 64? I’d prefer not to have two different versions on my computer for the very reasons you mentioned regarding being in one version when you needed to be in the other. I guess I’m asking why anyone would NEED both versions.

For the most part it really makes no difference. The reason I needed both of them recently is that the 64-bit version had a bug and and 32-bit version didn’t have the same bug. I needed to test for the bug in both versions.

The particular bug I was testing was that clicking a backwards chevron (a backwards arrow) in Descendant View was causing the 64-bit version to crash and doing the same thing in the 32-bit version worked just fine. This was in RM 10.0.8.0. The bug was fixed on RM 10.0.9.0.

That’s helpful. Thank you. Since I have the computer requirements to theoretically use the 64-bit version, I would really like to switch over. But it appears that I, and others, are experiencing the effects of some bugs that need to be addressed, so maybe I’ll wait a bit so they can be eliminated before I switch over to 64-bit.
