Recently I had to switch to a new MacBook Air, running Taho. While RM11 loaded and ran my existing database OK, I cannot sync with Ancestry’s TreeShare. I’ve created new DB and tried to download and import my Ancestry tree . . . the process freezes, similar to syncing via TreeShare. My old, now crashed, 2017 iMac, running Ventura, worked great with RM11 and Ancestry. I went back and booted RM9 and tried to download my Ancestry tree . . . same thing. Any ideas?
you did not mention what version of RM11 you might be on
There have been several posts about the change of API and some users did have some minors problems and some had none at all. While there were a handful of users who had more serious complications
Check out New RootsMagic Update (11.1.1)
also other posts – you might need to contact support support.
I was able to download from Ancestry to a new RM11 db and zero problems (over 25K people)
– however that might not be the best options for you.

Kevin . . . Many thanks. I thought I was up-to-date on RM11, but I checked, then downloaded 11.1.1. My problem of three weeks was solved. In my computer upgrade (from iMac to MacBook) I lost many media, but I know what to do . . . but it’ll take a while.
Herb
just clarifying what you mean by lost — RM lost links to them? or you physically lost the files from all computers and backups?
If you still have the files you might just to copy them to new computer – then use the find media tool for anything that remains broken.
Kevin
Not so much lost, as unlinked. I now have 1600 media items showing (Broken Link).
I’m having a weird problem. When I list my media file items , sorted by caption, then search by “(“ I get the list of broken link items, plus a handful of other items with a (…) as part of the caption. I then can go through this list and delete them one by one. It would great if I could highlight a large group of these items and delete them as a group. But it seems I have to do it one at a time.
Further, if I try to search on “(Broken Link)”, I get nothing. Even if I search on “(B” I get nothing. And if I try to sort my media list by file name I get a message that the file is corrupted; I can then shut down and restart, go to sort by caption and everything seems OK.
So I don’t think I lost any files, but the media file got screwed up. Once I get these 1600+ broken files removed from my system, I’m good.
Thanks for hanging with me.
Herb
And what is the find media tool?
from what it sounds like you might need to run tool and tell it where to look and it should find most if not all. Did the folder structure change? did you have media download through tree share?
**
However DO NOT rush running the tool before clarifying things and make sure you have backups**
Kevin
As I work through this I backup, including media, every so often. I run the fix broken media tool and it shows how many broken links I have. I run the fix and none are fixed now, but I still have nearly 1500 broken. I have gone through several backups – iCloud and TimeMachine. Many of the broken links are duplicates with the second not linked.
I think I know what happened maybe - this was a bug I reported last year after running fix media it corrupted the media table
Kevin . . . I just isolated and copied all my old/saved/trashed media folders and renamed them as “media x-xx”, with x-xx showing the date last modified. I have nine media folders saved in a new desktop folder named “Media folders”. They vary in size from 2.28 to 3.57 GB. The one labeled “Media 3-31” is the one I’m currently running with RM11.
That folder still has about 1500 broken files. Is there a way to test the corruption level of these, I can work with the most reliable and eliminate the others? Is there a way to “bulk eliminate” the broken files? I can’t highlight more than one file to eliminate. Herb
Kevin . . . A little more data. Here is the screenshot of the contents of the ‘Media folders’ folder.
And I just ran the Integrity Check on RM11, using Media 3-31 (w/o the 3-31 tag) and got this:
I then ran the other DB tools and the Integrity Check said OK. I’m confused.
yes bulk could be done via sqlite
do you know how to export tables
I would like to see two tables
multimedia table and Media Link table… I am only guessing you
have a similar problem to what I did last year
I think I would contact support /open ticket – they probably will ask for a copy of your database
Also keep any/ all copies of you backups you might have to restore
Ancestry tree share hasn’t worked in about two years. Tech support answer is AMT works with DOS / Windows operating system. “they are working on the solution”. My opinion is don’t beat your head against this wall. Just an opinion.
There are many people who seem to use it without issues. So I do not thing that statement is accurate - though it might be fair to say too many people have issues. What tech suppose said “…works with DOS / Windows”?
Thank you for your comment. It’s good to know many people do not have issues. If you are in tech support department please review my tickets and provide your answer for my problem. Thank you!
I am only an independent user
not with RM team.
just might understand databases in general and RM better than avg user
Please review RM community discussion TreeShare of large file on Mac causes RM10 to hang. Issue continues on RM11 using Osx Tahoe. Your recommendations will be welcomed. Thank you.
Did you try todays update?
Hi Kevin . . .
I think I’ve finally identified my problem with my media files. The media files were not corrupted; it seems the MEDIA LINKS within my database were somehow corrupted. I had a total of 6000 Media Links listed. And Fix Broken Links showed about 2000 not fixed. Here is a sample of one of the corrupted links:
/Users/herbreed/Desktop/RM 10/Media/Users/herbreed/Desktop/RM 10/media/Elizabeth Carroll Castleberry.jpg (2).jpg.
It should read:
/Users/herbreed/Desktop/RM 10/Media/Elizabeth Carroll Castleberry.jpg (2).jpg.
Someway I have added the extra “Users/herbreed/Desktop/RM 10/media” in about 2,000 media links.
I am solving it this way: in RootsMagic I open my Media list, sort for “file names”, then search on “(“. This brings up a number media links with a “(" in them, but most/many are Broken Files, all of which end in "(2).jpg”. I can then delete those links, one at a time. It’s time consuming but I’m getting there: I now have less that 500 more to delete. It would have been very helpful if I could’ve highlighted many Broken Links at once and then delete, but that doesn’t seem possible.
I have to search on “(“; I don’t know why I cannot successfully search on “(2)”, or “Broken Link."
I would appreciate your comments. And thanks for your patience.
Herb Reed
