I use the KISS method … C:\Genealogy\Media\filenames 
this might be a silly question – why are you using desktop for RM Media?
Kevin . . . I keep several key folders on desktop including my RM folder, which contains Data, Media, GED, and Reports folders. I put it there rather than the Documents folder. Is this causing a problem?

Putting shortcut is different than linking media to desktop. Depending on your setup - I would think you might be at risk for deleting /moving or copying by mistake. Maybe someone who has used that way can advise – and I have a petpeeve about clutter on the deskstop screen.
From Windows Explorer you can “pin quick access folders” That is how I quick access my media folder
I’m on a MacBook, not a PC. I use desktop stacks to keep my desktop orderly. My Media is linked to the Media folder within the RM folder on desktop.

Okay desktop folder on windows is what I was referring to ….so not sure about mac
