RM V7 upgrade to V11

V7 to V11 upgrade. What is the best case process? I may have V9 but never did that upgrade. I will definitely do backups first.

I’m not saying “backups first” is not a good idea, but in going from RM7 to RM11 the “backups first” are not quite as critical as they might be going from , say, RM10 to RM11. That’s because in going from RM7 to RM11 there will actually be an import from RM7 to RM11 and your RM7 data will remain in place and will remain completely unchanged.

That being said, I would suggest a new set of folders for RM for your database, backup, GEDCOM, and reports. However, you can probably just leave your media files where they are. It all depends upon whether your media files are in folders that actually are specific to RM7 or if they actually are their own thing. In any case, be sure to set your media folder option in RM11 before doing the import from RM7.

After your import, you probably should run the RM11 tool to merge duplicate sources and also the RM11 tool to merge duplicate citations. The exception might be that you probably shouldn’t do so if you have sources and citations that were downloaded into RM from Ancestry via TreeShare.

The RM11 install might ask if you wish to uninstall RM7. I would recommend saying “no”. For one thing, you might wish to be able to go back and look at your data in RM7 for a while. For another thing, the uninstall of RM7 might uninstall the place database used by County Check and the Gazetteer. This is not the same as the place list in your database, but you still would rather not have to re-install it.
