Updating from 9 to 11

So because of the update in the api at Ancestry I have purchased version 11. I like to keep my Rootsmagic tree synced with my Ancestry tree. I am nervous about making the switch and having treeshare showing as everyone needing to be compared by me instead of just the profiles with recent changes. I have backed up my Rootsmagic tree along with the database and it shows as RMBACKUP file the same as other backups without the database but by the size of the file I know has everything. I see when I search online that it is supposed to be a rmtree file but maybe that is not true anymore? I did run the broken media links tool just now and checked for integrity to prepare for the switch. What else should I do to have the best possible outcome and how should I best proceed? Thank you for your assistance.

Keeping versions in separate folders is a recommended suggestion
RM8, RM9, and RM11 (assuming you skipped RM10)
Backups can also be done by same way. Having the database by diff folder is suggested because RM will convert to the RM11 format – once converted you can not go backwards. So it is suggested you copy previous version to RM11 folder then open from RM from that folder (RM11 etc) so it can be converted. Other then the new enhancement RM11 is very similar to Rm9 Certainly worth it to upgrade for those alone.

You want to adjust you folders to Rm11 folder after you open Rm11 database so that things do not get confused

Hi thank you for your reply. So I need to go step by step here to make sure I am following you. So I made a folder called Rootsmagic 9 on my desktop and moved my various backups there and technically not Rootsmagic 9 itself there but just a shortcut to it. Rootsmagic 9 is stored in my program files. I can attempt to move it to the folder if that is necessary.

I made a folder named Rootsmagic 11 and I assume I can install 11 right to that folder? Then I want to copy recent backups to that folder so they will convert to 11 when used?

My media folders will stay where they are now.

I don’t really follow your last statement. My backups don’t identify as anything other than backups and I will just go by the date to tell whether they are 9 or 11 I think.

well that is up to you - I back them by RMver# (RM10 or RM11 etc) that way If restore later I know better where they came form.

My Main Media folder (Parent) is the same for all of my RM versions (except special projects).
I then have subfolder by media record type within.

When you mentioned program files you’re not meaning you have the RM database (.rmtree) file inside the C:\Program Files\RootsMagic 11 or C:\Program Files (x86)\RootsMagic 11 folders are you? You certain do want to remove the database from that location if it is. Uninstalling the program would delete the database too.

As long as you don’t have OneDrive as your documents folder its best to create a RM folder off of that than your desktop.

Ok I now understand that as you make the backup you add the version to the file name. And I get that the main Media folder stays the same and I too have different media folders for special projects. Thanks.

No I didn’t mean I had the RM database inside the program files folders as you state. I don’t use OneDrive so I made a change on your recommendation and made a folder for the Version 9 backups in a documents folder instead of the desktop. Since I am moving things around I already had to redirect RM to find my database file. Hopefully once I install 11 I can direct to where it needs to find things.

no I do not bother manually modifying the file name – I let RM do that most of the time.
I change the Folder/Subfolder – Backups/RM10/ or Backups/RM11/ etc — just is just what I do.
You should do whatever works best for you as long as you aware of any potential consequences

@lubbersk You MIGHT have already figured this out BUT you do NOT use your backup file( you have to restore a backup in RM) when you convert from RM 9 to RM 11-- you use your RM tree (such as Smith.rmtree) where ever you had previously stored that..

As said, it is suggested that you keep your rmtrees and backup in a folder called RM 11 in your document folder BUT whatever you want would work..

So what you do is open your RM 9 database and make a copy of all the ones you want to transfer to RM 11-- and put the copies in where ever your RM11 files are going to be stored-- then open RM 11 and-- go to FILE and click on OPEN a RM file— hopefully you will see it in the list BUT if NOT just use the BROWSE at the bottom of the page to find it..

Once you click on it, you will get this message

HIT Convert and you should be good to go-- make sure you back it up when you close out so that you have your file and a backup in your folder..

Can’t say for sure BUT I think that your Ancestry tree and RM should still be in synch as of the last time you did it-- so I would think the only ones you would have to do is any that you have added either to RM or Ancestry since the last time you synched

Nancy,

Thank you for this information. Yes I did finally figure out you use the .rmtree file not the backup file. I did get the RM 9 database to convert and load in 11. I did back up when I was finished and put that file in my new RM 11 folder. And I saw that the .rmtree file that was in the 9 folder was now called a Rootsmagic 11 file, so I moved that to the 11 folder too.

I had another copy of the 9 version of .rmtree that I had in a different place on my PC but that converted to 11 too as I saw when I scrolled over it. So I don’t have a version 9 tree anymore and I guess I can’t use the version 9 program anymore. Not sure how I was supposed to prevent that from happening.

When I ran the Ancestry share in 11, I was concerned as it took a long time to load that maybe I was going to have everyone show as changed but fortunately it worked out and just showed the changed people since I had last done a synched. So I was happy about that.

You say you did a Backup. Use Restore and choose that most recent backup.

Ok will do. Thanks Kevin..

That was why we said to make a copy of your RM 9 file and put the copy in your RM 11 folder

BUT no harm, you can just restore a backup as Kevin said-- you can also make a gedcom of your RM 11 file and open that up in RM 9

I had attempted to save that copy of 9 but I was unsuccessful to a large decree because I don’t know what I am doing with the various RM files. But as you said I do have backups and I can use those. Is there a way to mark this discussion as solved? Thanks for everyone’s help.
