Help needed to install RM11 upgrade (from RM7)

My imac computer recently died and I’ve replaced it with a Macbook Pro. All the files were transferred but my RM7 will not work. I’ve just purchased RM11 but before I attempt to download the upgrade can anyone offer advice? I’m not very tech savvy! Thanks.

Most likely you need to Reinstall 7 - Download RootsMagic 7

You don’t need it to run v11, just Import your v7 data into v11.

rm7 doesn’t run on the latest mac OSes and will probably not run on your macbook pro. Check the RM7 download page for details - Download RootsMagic 7

Download RM11 from here - Download RootsMagic 11

A lot has changed since RM7, so you might want to create a small play database or use a copy of your db and watch some videos before working on your real database. You also might want to review the what’s new videos for each release starting with RM8 - https://www.youtube.com/@RootsMagicTV

The actual conversion is easy as @MadDog noted …File, Import Data, Import from Rootsmagic 4-7. Then go through your settings including the default folder settings.

Beyond that, be patient. It will take some time for you to get comfortable with all of the new enhancements, tools, and features.

Eww! Thanks. Will have to wait for a day when I’m feeling braver! I actually purchased RM8 but could never get my data transferred to it! Also, its been about 4 years since I did anything on RM at all so I feel like I’m starting from scratch. I think it would be less intimidating if I was starting from scratch! Thanks for your help.

Thanks Kevinm. I’ve been watching videos over the years to try to keep up but when I couldn’t get RM 8 to work I think I lost confidence. Plus we got caught up in moving and renovations. I’d really like to get back into it so I’ll be patient, as you advise, and work through it.

If I download 11 will I still be able to import the data from 7 if it isn’t actually functioning on this laptop? The RM 8 that I downloaded won’t function either.

Yes, RM 11 will import your rm7 database and convert it. You don’t need the rm7 program for that. Your database file name will stay the same but the file type (the part after the “.”) will change to “rmtree” (rm7 file type is “rmgc”). So you can tell the files apart. Some people prefer to actually edit the new file name and add “rm11” or “11” so that it’s easier to identify the new RM11 file.

Your thought of approaching it like it’s a new program and your starting from scratch is a good idea. Enjoy!

To get comfortable with RM, make a New practice database - Enter you & your parents basic info, delete database & repeat a couple of times. Start to add more Facts, then move on to adding Media. Once you get the “feel” add Sources, etc.

Watch the videos prior to each step so you know how to do each.

Thanks again.
I may actually just start fresh - slowly as you suggested.
I have over 900 people in my tree but when I first got RM I imported it from Ancestry which had some wrong information. I didn’t know I had to download documents in order to keep them either so there are several missing links.
I’d like to revamp my media files while I’m at it if you have any advice on that.
I’ve seen several organization videos but they aren’t always geared to RM specifically.

I’ve learned a lot in the last few years on webinars etc so it’s a good time to put it all into practice and clean up the clutter!

Cheers

RM7 only worked in a codeweaver fake windows bottle and stopped working several mac os versions ago. Apple updates their OS yearly unlike the decade Microsoft uses. Just install RM11 and watch the videos for RM8, 9, 10 and 11. First copy your RM7 databases and save the copies in a new folder. These get converted to the RM11 format when opened.

You can uninstall RM7 with instructions from support.

All media from Ancestry gets put into a folder with your database name followed by _media. There shouldn’t be any missing since all get download that are in Ancestry.

The folder contents will have numbers for file names which don’t make any sense.

You can rename them, just have RM show the filename and have the folder displaying them in another window.

Now if you have a Folder Structure (a main folder with several subfolders) that is more work. Have the folder open and in RM look at the media and change to that location.
