I wonder if I am just missing it, but I don’t see a quick and easy way to navigate from editing a person’s profile to the Family view. Does anyone know a good way besides leaving the edit person page, opening the People list, and clicking the Family button?
As a feature request, I’d love to see a method where I can simply click something on the Edit Person page to take me to that person’s Family view. It could take the form of a butoon on the left side panel where we currently see Info, Notes, Sources, etc… Or, it could be a selection on the three-dot ellipsis at the top of the Edit Person page.
I have the Life Summary tab showing and just move the Edit window to the side so I can see it. If I Minimize the Edit window I can open 2 more Edit windows which is more then enough for me.
on mac: if in a person’s edit screen simply click on the main window behind to get back to whatever view you had active such as people or family. return to the edit screen by clicking on the tab shown at the bottom
Rooty is correct, with the proviso that Windows doesn’t minimize the Edit Person window down into a tab below when just clicking to the Family screen View tab. For that, you must use the underscore icon in upper right corner to minimize to a tab. Rather, it just brings the full RM main screen to the forefront overlaying where you just were. The Edit Person window remains open underneath. So, leave a little portion of the Edit Person screen window “offset” from the main screen’s window “footprint” and click between open windows.
It was a good idea, but I just tried that on my Windows 11 HP brand laptop running RM11. Whether I click either button to the left of the ‘X’ (close window), any other (underscore or window) reduces or minimizes the Edit screen and I do not have the ability to re-open that from the Tray at the bottom of Windows.
I can, however, reduce the Edit screen to a smaller version and drag it to my second monitor allowing me to continue seeing the Family View on my first monitor… But, that inhibits my use of other apps like my browser or word processor without causing the Edit window to vaporize. I can’t find that window again to re-open it…
I’m always complaining that RM is far too clicky. And to be fair, there are some things in RM11 that have helped a bit with the clickiness. In the case of this suggestion, I’m trying to decide if this kind of feature would make RM more clicky or less clicky. It’s not clear to me at this point.
At the same time, I need to confess to a certain bias about RM’s Family View. It used to be my favorite view. Ever since RM8, it has been my least favorite view. That’s because it now contains fewer children and less information about each person than did the RM7 Family View. Instead, I use Descendant View set to either 2 generations or to 3 generations a great deal. And I make use of People View a great deal, along with the Life Summary tab showing in the side panel. So I’m not sure I want an option that would be putting me into a view that I inherently dislike and seldom use.
So I guess I’m wondering what’s magic about going to Family View. What if you were already in Pedigree View or Descendant View or People View and from any of them had gone into Edit Person. Would the new option always take you to Family View, or rather would it return you to whatever View you most recently were using with the person from the Edit Person screen now highlighted and with the focus? I think I could see some good utility in that approach.
I’m also trying to think about how is this actually different than must minimizing the Edit Person screen as others have suggested and letting your Family View just bubble to the top. You can do that right now, but it will not necessarily get the correct person highlighted and with the focus, and right now it wouldn’t put the screen into Family View unless Family View were already the current main view.
Finally, I would be much happier with a feature like this if you could easily go in both directions. By that I mean, that after going from Edit Person to the Family View (or other view if that was the way it was implemented), I would like it to be much easier to get back into Edit Person. The little “Edit Person memory bar” or whatever it’s called at the bottom the screen that you can click on to get back into your open Edit Person windows is virtually invisible and is accessible only via the mouse or other pointing device. You can’t hot key in out of the Edit Person screen from the keyboard.
So this really is an interesting idea with lots of possibilities. And I’m in favor of anything that makes RM’s user interface less clicky and more in accord with accessibility standards. But I think some of the details of this idea need to be fleshed out a bit more.
Jerry, I definitely prefer a more universal solution whereby, regardless your current position or screen, the user has the immediate availability to navigate to any other view of that person effortlessly. It should be a many-to-many operation…
As it is today, the reason I was focused on the Person Edit window is mostly due to the fact the People page views already allow direct navigation between multiple other views. The Person Edit screen should be treated as any other view with the allocation to navigate directly to any alternative view of that person, just as it is in the other views.
Universal solutions are sometimes hard to deliver. But this one has great potential to improve overall user experience.
Does your Windows tray stay on the bottom of the screen all the time. If so, it may be hiding the bottom border of the full-screen RM window which displays the name(s)/button(s) of the Edit Person window(s). You can set the tray to auto-hide and that will reveal the RM bottom border and Edit Person selectors. Or you could set the Windows tray vertical on either side of the screen.
I’ve had issues with the tray getting unhidden when I’ve not called for it and have to toggle the Windows key to hide it.
IF your screens are maximized to Full Screen, You’ll not see the Edit Person windows after transitioning to the Main screen. They’ll be overlayed completely.
Two Edit Person windows plus the Main Screen. The first one, somewhat"behind" the Main Screen, was a result of just clicking onto a View tab (Pedigree, but all work similarly) from that partly hidden Edit Person window. The second bottom Edit Person window was minimized (using the underscore icon) to a rollup tab of its Title bar and can be restored back to open and ontop the others by left-clicking anywhere on the little roll up tab EXCEPT the far right X icon (obviously that is Close):
Are you trying to see a list of family members? If so, the drop arrows on the Edit Person screen spouse and parents rows will show them. Clicking on their name will switch the Edit Person screen to them. There is a back arrow in the upper left corner of the Edit Person screen to go back.
Hi Renee… The point of my orignal thought was to normalize navigation between views. I realize Edit Person is not considered a ‘View’ per se, as defined by the People page buttons. But, isn’t it really just another view?
My first thought was to make it easy from the Edit Person view to navigate quickly to any of the other views without the extra step of closing the current Edit Person, then choosing which view to see. As it works from those other views, when you highlight one person and then click one of the view buttons, the screen updates to that view with that highlighted person as the focus.
The idea is, if looking at the Edit Person page and I click a similar set of buttons to open a different view with that person as focus, it might save steps. Instead, if I see an event for the birth of John Doe’s son, I have to close the edit window and open the Family View for Junior Doe to see Junior’s family (wife/kids). I was thinking that sort of navigating could be improved.
@tstrickland What Renee is saying is that you can jump to anyone else in the family without closing the 1st edit page. Click on the down arrow next to the spouse or parents and you can pull up anyone’s edit page..
under the 3 dots next to a name, you can click on Go To person and your Main screen will change to that person-- click on edit person and their edit screen appears-- note that my other edit screens are behind the main window–just click any where on it to bring it forward-- also note that you can only have 3 edit screens open at a time–keep in mind that sometimes an edit screen will be completely hidden behind a main screen-- just move the main screen over and you should be able to see it or other wise try minimizing the main page to the tray and then maximizing it again-- best to have the screen in a partial not full size…
I think what others are trying to point out is that you don’t have to close the Edit Person window to switch to the Family view. As long as your windows aren’t the exact same size they will both be visible and fully functional. You don’t need a button to switch to the main screen, just position your windows so that they are both visible and you can switch back and forth with a single mouse click.. there’s no need to clutter the screen with a button to do the same thing. You can have up to 3 Edit Person windows plus the main RM window open at the same time.
