I would like to add other family members from a person’s edit screen (see image). Is this possible and if so, how to do?
The answer is pretty much no. You pretty much have to be in one of the main person type views such as Family View or Pedigree View to add family members.
I say “pretty much” for a couple of reasons. One reason is that you don’t actually have to close the Edit Person screen. Instead, you can minimize it and you will immediately see the main person view you were most recently in such as Family View or Pedigree View. But whether the Edit Person screen is actually closed or is only minimized doesn’t seem to me to make much practical difference. You are still adding new family members from one of the main person views.
The other reason for “pretty much” is that you can sort of add a spouse from the Edit Person screen, even though you cannot add parents or children. Which is to say, you can add a Marriage fact from the Edit Person screen even though the person doesn’t yet have a spouse. In that case, the dialog to add the Marriage fact will take a short detour outside of the Edit Person screen to let you add the spouse. The short detour will then return you to the Edit Person screen to allow you to complete the addition of the Marriage fact for the newly added spouse.
But as I said in the beginning, the answer is pretty much no.
This isn’t correct. If a person’s edit screen is open and the keyboard command is used, it utilizes context.
For example, while editing myself, I pressed Shift-Ctrl-C to add a child. It picked up the context of adding that child to me. See below.
Edit: replacing image to remove my birth year. Don't want y'all to know how old & crinkly I'm getting. 😜
Interesting. I did not know that. Much thanks for the info.
I had forgotten about that ability
You can have multiple Edit Person screens open and still access the main program windows. That’s why Shift-Ctrl-C to add a child works. It is looking at the person currently highlighted in the main view. You have to be careful using it while multiple Edit Person screens are open. It may not actually be the person highlighted on the main program window. Then you would be adding a relationship to the wrong person.
My screen is big enough for the family view and a couple of open edit person windows (That’s why the OS is called “Windows”). Minimize is optional.
A big screen is pretty inexpensive and worth the investment. Just need a place to put it.
Thanks Kimberly, something new to explore and use with RM. Thank you for the pointer(s).
There is just so much to learn with RM. Thank you and the others for being so patient with my learning.
I have a 40 inch monitor and still learning how to get the various windows. I think I need to get a Youtube video to review. My only concern is with the size of fonts as these eyes are getting old - smiling.
RM does have one control you can use to increase the size of the screen fonts. The control may be found under Settings > Display Settings > Font Scaling %.I have mine set to 105%. If I make it any larger than that, it seems to make the screens harder to see rather than easier to see.
But I don’t think the font size is the real issue. I think the real issues are that you can’t choose an actual font and that sometimes there is not enough contrast between the dark text and the lighter background. On the issue of screen contrast, it seems to me that modern flat screens do not display differences in contrast as clearly as did the old CRT screens from years ago. Therefore, I think apps running on a flat screen (which is all apps these days) need to have a bit more contrast than they do.
There are fonts that I find much easier to read then the one that RM uses on the screen, but I can’t choose such fonts in RM10 like I could in RM7. And sometimes it feels like I have dark gray text on a light gray background when what I really need is black text on a white background. What RM is doing has a very modern look and feel. But I think the modern look and feel is a negative rather than a positive.
2 monitors are easier to deal with the various windows, 3 monitors are even better
Thanks for the info, I haven’t spent much time learning the key board short cuts but I will probably stick with adding people on the Family View.
