Getting from Edit Person screen while in Tasks or Sources to People page w/ Edit Panel

I am doing edits/cleanups in the Tasks and Sources tabs. From there I can get to the person’s Edit Screen where the task or source is attached. However, I often want to get to the People tab to access the Edit Panel from the Edit Screen to do more work. I’m not finding a way to do that except by closing the person’s edit screen, opening the People tab and then searching for the person, which requires me to remember (or write down) their name and birth date so I can find them in the people list. Is there a way to jump from the edit person screen directly to the People tab with the person’s Edit Panel opened up? If not, can we please have that feature?

Also, the person who’s edit screen I entered from the Tasks or Sources tab does not show up on the History list when I go back to the People tab. So I can’t get to them easily from there either.

Not sure what you’re referring to as the Edit Panel.

The left menu People tab and each of the left menu tabs are distinct separate screens. Each separate screen offers some functions via dedicated panels or also act as the parent of child windows that open to achieve certain functionalities of their parent screen. It’s the same for each left menu item.

I believe only the People menu offers a way to jump to another menu item while child windows are open. Those child windows are the Edit Person windows and you can have up to three open at one time.

So, if you open three Edit Person windows (of folks you are working on), you can then jump back and forth between the Tasks menu screen and any other menu screen or between the Tasks screen and any of the three Edit Person windows or between any other menu screen and any of the three Edit Person windows.

When you’re done with one of the three Edit Person windows (for now)… you close one (or two) and open one (or two) more.

I’m meaning the main screen in the People tab. Off to the left or the right (your choice) it had lots of details and navigation choices on the selected person. I cannot get to this screen when I have been in the Tasks tab or the Sources tab and am in the edit screen of a person who was referred to in one of those tasks or sources. I want to be able to go directly from that edit person screen to the main People tab screen without having to exit where I am (tasks or sources) and type in and search for the person that I was just in the person edit screen of.

I think I know what you are asking. For example, say you are looking at sources in the main source section click on citations arrow >

Then Click on used

Then Click on the pencil and it will take to the persons edit screen

This will pop up

I think I can clarify what you are saying. I don’t use Tasks, but I obviously do use so Sources, so I will describe it in terms of Sources.

What I will describe as the “main tabs menu” is always on the far left side of the screen. Even if you place the sidebar on the right side of the screen, the “main tabs menu” is always on the left.

Scenario #1. Suppose you are in the main People tab on the left side of the screen and then go into the Edit Person screen. If you make the Edit Person screen less then full screen, you can see all the main tabs on the left side of the screen. You can go to any of the other main tabs such as Places or Media, etc. Or you can click on the main People tab again and then go to the Edit Person screen for someone else. You can have more than one Edit Person screen open at the same time. The key point about this scenario is that being in the first Edit Person screen does not lock you out of using the rest of RM.

Scenario #2. Suppose you are in the main Sources tab on the left side of the screen. You can then select a citation for that source. Having selected a citation for that source, you can click on the “Citation Used” option in the right hand panel, and you can highlight one of the places where the citation is used to do some additional editing associated with that use of the citation. There are then four options: + to add the citations to additional places, - to delete the citation from that place place where it is used, Edit to edit the item where the citation is used (truly editing the item, not just the citation), and Links to edit the citation links.

That’s kind of a convoluted way to describe it, but when you choose the Edit to edit the item where the citation is used, it opens the Edit Person screen for the person where the citation is used. At that point, you have full access to the Edit Person screen for that person. You are not limited just to editing the citation. But here is the difference you are talking about. Unlike in Scenario #1, you are locked into that Edit Person screen. You cannot make the Edit Person screen smaller and then get into other parts of RM. Well, you can make the Edit person screen smaller so you can see the other parts of RM. But if you try to go to the other parts of RM, the screen just beeps and jiggles at you and you are stuck in the Edit Person screen until you exit that particular screen.

Actually, even when you are locked into the Edit Person screen in Scenario #2, there still is a limited ability to switch to the Edit Person screen for other people. I do not know if it would meet your needs or not. You can do it from any Edit Person screen, not just this one that you are locked into. You can click on the Spouse line in the upper half of the Edit Person screen and switch to the Edit Person screen for spouse or any of the spouse’s children. You can click on the Parents line in the upper half of the Edit Person screen and switch to the Edit Person screen for the parents or any of their children. This is a seldom noticed feature of RM that can be very useful at times.

When I want to move from the Tasks’ Used List to the People page I note the RIN of the person of interest. (You can turn on RINs under Settings, General, Number to Display.) Enter the RIN in the search box on the People List view or Index tab in the sidebar.

Confirming a “go to” request between the Task and People page has been reported to development.

I think an easy fix (until a direct link can be put on the edit person page that we are using in a place other than the people tab) is if anyone who we have accessed the edit person page of would appear in the History section on the People tab screen. Then we could click on them from there and not have to try and remember their name to look them up.

Yes, those screen shots are the work flow that I’m talking about. We need a way to get from that edit screen to the People tab screen for more research or editing.

That’s a really interesting suggestion. It would be useful in the case of people you access indirectly via the “Tags” or “Used” options for things like Media and Citations. It would also be useful in the case of family members you access indirectly via the Person or Spouse line from the Edit Person screen as I described in my previous post in this thread.

I don’t mean to step on this feature request but, as Jerry pointed out, the issue is larger than Tasks. The limitation of not being able to go to any other window after clicking on the “edit” (pencil) action from the “Used” view pane occurs in any situation where the “Used” field is exposed in the UI. This includes the Places, Sources, Media, Addresses, and Repositories menus as well as Tasks.

Can the scope of the request be expanded to address the core issue and not just when it occurs in Tasks or can we please add additional requests to address these issues? I can understand the desire to not loose track of the screen where the “Used” action was triggered and am hoping that the enhancement can be applied globally.

[edit:] I forgot to say Thank you !
