I have used RM for over 15 years so I decided that rather than moving directly to RM11 I would create a “test” set of data in RM 11 from a .ged extracted from my current RM 10 data. One thing I noticed is that AGAIN I have lost my group tags when the data moved over.
My tip is to use the individual list report to capture and print the various members of your groups so that you can re-tag them in RM11.
As far as I know, groups have never transferred via GED, so I don’t know why you need to emphasize ‘AGAIN’. It isn’t like this was a function that used to exist and now does not.
Groups are not preserved in GEDCOM or Drag n Drop. To move from RM10 to RM11, and preserve your groups, it’s best to just open the file and convert it. All the settings along with groups will remain.
They never transferred from one version to another, this was the first time I tried a ged. I was hoping that this new version would transfer it over. I made the suggestion after RM 10 was released.
I c converted it from RM 9 to RM 10 and lost groups, I was hoping it was fixed for RM11. Maybe it is, I chose to go the ged route as I plan to continue working in RM 10 for a while longer. To be on the safe side, I think it is wise to print the lists.
I’m repeating what has already been said. But I would not recommend using GEDCOM in the manner you describe. A great deal more than groups can be lost by using GEDCOM to move from RM10 to RM11. See this link for more information about such losses.
I think it does make a lot of sense to continue using RM10 for a while so you can test out and evaluate RM11. In order to do that, you do need to avoid opening your production RM10 database in RM11. It appears that you are using GEDCOM as your transfer method specifically to avoid opening your RM10 database in RM11. But I think that a better way is to make a new set of folders for RM11, to copy your RM10 database to the new RM11 folders, and to rename your RM10 database to reflect a new name for RM11. At this very instant, the database will still be in RM10 format despite having been copied to the RM11 folders and despite having been renamed. However, you now can open the newly copied and renamed RM10 database with RM11 and your production RM10 database will remain unchanged and will remain fully usable with RM10.
The procedure I describe will not lose your groups, nor will it lose any other data from RM10.
Follow MadDog’s advice. He suggests the same procedure I follow and when I converted my RM10 files to RM11 this morning the Groups all transferred without any problems.
For what it’s worth, I’m pretty sure I had no problems when I converted my RM9 files to RM10, though I can’t remember for certain.
That’s the same concept we have been talking about. But strictly speaking, you can’t do a Save As of an RM file. RM is different from most programs. You don’t Open the file at the beginning and then Save or Save As at the end. Instead, you Open the file at the beginning RM saves as it goes. So rather than doing a Save As to make a copy you do a Copy to make a Copy. This is the same concept, but it has to be done a little different than most other programs because there is no Save or Save As.
Before installing RM11, I made a folder C:\RM11data and copied my database file from RM7data to the new RM11 onw. I believe I kept the old name, but renaming it something different would have been a good idea. After installing RM11, I simply chose the RM7 database file inside the RM11data file to convert. I also had saved my RM7 file to a flash drive in case I messed something up.
This is what I do as well - my v.10 is silver and my v.11 is purple. I also moved v.10 from the sidebar so I have to go to my Applications folder to open it. Can’t be too careful!
