Compare files in RootsMagic 11 gets Access Violation & Crashes Program

I have two RootsMagic 11 files. I’m not sure how the second one got created, but I now have two. the original one is called “Mollison Family Tree MASTER RM11” and the second one is called “Mollison Family Tree MASTER RM11-TeriMollison.” In any event, the 2nd one is the one that I’ve been working in. Both files are located in the same folder.

I tried to run the tool to Compare these two files, and each time, it starts the comparison and then gives me the same Error message and I have to completely close down RootsMagic and relaunch it.

did try running database tools in both Databases? before running?

Also how much memory installed on computer?

I have plenty of memory. It is a brand new laptop. I just tried running all the database tools in both files before running Compare Files. Same error. Same crash.

then I would also suggest running the task manager to see what might be using resources.

My understanding is that error does not usually occur is the same way/manner. But file compare is not a common task for average user.

For an error that is this severe and this repeatable, the best approach is probably to open a trouble ticket with the RM HelpDesk. support@rootsmagic.com

Agree with Jerrys advise

Make sure you have restarted computer – I recall some user who experienced this issue had some luck by manually reinstall program

Make sure you specify if you installed 32 or 64b ver of RM (most like is 32b if you did not choose)

Also your OS ver and computer spec would be helpful to RM team – they will ask for additional info if missed anything.

Will try restarting. It is Windows 11, and I installed the 32 ver of RM since that was what was recommended and is what I had on my old laptop. I will open a ticket with the RM HelpDesk. Thanks for your advice.

most likely you computer is not that old if it is a W11 computer.

however there are many factors beyond computer spec it self – such as malware programs running (not properly configured) and many other things.

If you are just trying to find out the differences, open 1, People List and add the Date Edited column.

Open 2nd one and People List, Date Edited.

You will now see the # of people and when you lasted edited them in each database.

It won’t show you how you edited them but it’s a start.
