I have googled all possible ways to transfer data with no success. Can someone help please? Steph
There are different ways to do this, but this is what I suggest:
Back up your RM databases to a flash drive
Download your version of RM to the new laptop
Restore your databases to the new copy of RM on the new computer
For the full version you will need to to add your registration number you received at the time of purchase. If you do not have it, and you registered, you can get it from the phone number on the Rootsmagic site: www.rootsmagic.com tomorrow. The office will not be open today.
Just remember to tick the “Include Media” tick-box if you want your images restored.
Not if you want to preserve your file names and folder structure.
If on mac simply run Migration Assistant which will transfer all data, applications, settings, etc with your same folder structure. to the new mac.
If on Windows just install a fresh download of RM on the new pc. If both pcs are on the same network you can copy data over wifi or from an external drive.
In a certain sense, this question is not really about RM. It’s a more general question about how you transfer your data from your old computer to your new computer. If you can transfer all your data from your old computer to your new computer, then your RM data will be part of the data that is transferred. And if you don’t transfer all your data and only transfer your RM data, what happens to the rest of your data? Surely you don’t want to lose it.
A lot of times, the best solution will be to pay an expert to transfer all of your data for you. Or find a friend or relative with the computer skills to transfer all of your data for you.
If you move the data yourself, a common approach is to copy your data from your old computer to a removable device such as a removable hard drive or a USB thumb drive. Then copy the data from from the removable device to the new computer.
A similar approach is to use a cloud syncing service such as OneDrive of Dropbox to copy your data from your old computer to the cloud service and then to copy your data from the cloud to your new computer. There are also Internet backup services such as Carbonite which can be used to backup your files from your old computer and to restore your files to your new computer. I have used both cloud syncing services and Internet backup services to copy my data from an old computer to a new computer.
Caution mus be used with cloud syncing services. To avoid corrupting your RM data, you must keep your RM database outside the syncing service and keep your RM backup files inside the syncing service. Or else you must pause the syncing service while you are using RM.
@Steph51 --Some really good suggestions already from very knowledgeable people.. I tried googling your question using Yahoo instead of Google and A I gave me the following summary and then you could go in and research each method more if you wanted…
Suggestion from A I—
To transfer RM10 files from your old laptop to your new laptop, follow these steps:
- Use a USB Drive: Copy the files to a USB drive and then transfer them to the new laptop.
- Cloud Storage: Upload the files to a cloud service (like Google Drive or Dropbox) and download them on the new laptop.
- External Hard Drive: Connect an external hard drive to the old laptop, transfer the files, and then connect it to the new laptop.
- Network Transfer: Connect both laptops to the same Wi-Fi network and use file sharing to transfer files directly.
- Email: Email the files to yourself and open the email on the new laptop to download them.
- Data Transfer Cable: Use a data transfer cable to connect both laptops and transfer files directly.
A long long time ago, I used email to transfer from one computer to another and it worked great–since then I have tried several other options BUT they never worked–so I completely understand why you would be asking how do I do this…
If you map a network drive on your computer (by right clicking in windows explorer) to the root folder containing RM folders and use a letter such as T (for tree) and set the RM folders to use this letter in the path rather than the normal C:\ or D:\ path, you can then just copy the folders to a new computer and map the same drive letter and it will work fine.
My RM data folder is actually D:\Documents\FamilyTree\Roots Magic Data but I map D:\Documents\FamilyTree to T: so it becomes T:\Roots Magic Data in the RM program and databases.
