I have been adding WebTags to places (I have been getting stack overflow errors) – not database error on tools – this appears to be a repeatable bug (not sure the exact conditions)
That’s an interesting one. I don’t remember seeing it, or anybody ever reporting it. We see Access Violation errors and that sort of thing, but nary a Stack Overflow do I ever remember hearing about with respect to RM. Because it’s specific to webtags for places, hopefully this might be an easy one to find.
I am working on a family tree for another family member – for Cemeteries I was adding Webtag for Find-a-grave— 3 Webtags to each place and one has note.
Also its seems to be because I am adding 3 (sometimes 4 to each place) and doing that process several times in a row – it might be due to RM not clearing allocation?
The program might hang (briefly) then not display places in the grid. Running compact might help hard to to tell
On the FB group, 2 people had stated they have same Stack Overflow msg when working with Places.
No fix yet and they didn’t say exactly what they were doing when it came up.
A stack overflow often but not always is the result of recursive function calls that go around too many times. It’s seldom something so simple as a function directly calling itself too many times. More often, a function triggers something that triggers something that triggers something the eventually calls the original function and the process repeats. The bug may not be in RM. It may be in library routines that RM uses. But since it’s known to be coming from adding Web tags to Places, I suspect the problem can chased down and fixed.
thanks MD – thats helpful I usually comment on FB posts when I see them but most of the the time I only post here on community page
What OS and version of RM11 are you using?
Win11
RM 11.0.3 64Bit
not sure if because there is a filter applied if that is a contributing factor (but I notice another users screenshot on FB)
As a follow up, I added about 15 webtags between 2 places with NO errors.
Win11 & latest RM
did any of the web tags contain Note(s)?
I have tried to repeat the exact conditions but have not been able to – (example click in place grid while webtags are showing in right panel)
No Notes.
I wanted to see if I could trigger the msg as I don’t use webtags with Places. I couldn’t.
You have the cemetery name in the Place while I have them in the Place Details.
In the Place Details for cemetery - I put the webtag for the cemetery there along with the webtags for persons buried in said cemetery.
For the Place name (Toledo, Ohio) I added webtags for the census/residence/city directory of the people who I found living there.
I don’t know your thought process in adding webtag & Notes. to Places. Shouldn’t make a difference but what are you trying to accomplish?
this is a not my main database. This was a test case to see how / if advantage to use webtags vs just in the place note field.
Since Webtags are configured to be used with places they should work work in RM.
As far Cemeteries – I adopted this practice before moving to RM – I do not use Place details for Cemeteries - but use them for basically everything else. The reason at the time was they did not transfer well to my TNG Site. so all my cemeteries have 5 places of hiarchry (4 commas, Country, State, County, City and then cemetery). This Works beautifully for TNG and other purposes.
I Switched to try using WebTag vs adding clutter in Note field
it would look like this.
the goal was to keep things cleaner and see how they would transfer before I did that with my 28K person database. This data only has 2500 people and a fraction of the places
My main database has over 2000 cemeteries
I can recreate it on the Windows 64-bit version of RM11. I have to filter the list and then add about 2 webtags and on my third attempt edit an existing webtag and it will freeze. Then it will follow with the “Stack overflow” message. It has been reported to development. Have not been able to recreate it on the 32-bit version.
basically that is what I was experiencing. Although I was not always able to reproduce the error at the same point – but it multiple webtags seem to be key.
Although in one of FB threads – places without webtags might also get that error.
