I have just installed RM7 and RM8 on my new W11 laptop from the old W10 one. All Went well!! When I backed it up and also created a ged for it the size of the file went up from 2000+ to 7500+…on the old W10 they were about equal in the 2000+. Did that program get some huge enhancement or did i check/uncheck something extra to download?
Went up from? From RM7 to RM8? Database (.rmgc) or Gedcom (.ged) went up? Are 2000+ and 7500+ the number of individuals? Or some file system filesize? How did you load RM8 with the RM7 database? Import from RootsMagic 1-7 or from GEDCOM?
I am looking at the file size of the back up not the number of people in my data base. I downloaded RM8 and opened the master files previously saved. I did the same when i also downloaded rm7 and also opened the master files for RM7.
attached a screenshot of the files …the one in 2024 were from the w10 laptop the 2025 ones are from the new w11 laptop
No that box was not checked…I backed up again today and it still ramains that same huge file size.
I checked the master file sizes and they are 10K on RM8 but only 4K on RM7
Do I need to start all over again and delete the data bases and RM 8 program?
Firstly, by way of explanation, .RMBACKUP files are ~actually~ just .ZIP compressed archive files whose contents are .RMTREE database files (or .RMGC for RM7) and ~optionally~ all the media files. So, you could open/view/extract the contents using programs like 7-Zip / WinZIP / Etc. to check what is in them and the filesizes.
Separately, you could compare statistics of the databases (from the two databases that make up the two separate Backup files). I can’t remember when program features came to each new version, but:
Command Palette>Count trees
Home>File Properties
Tools>Enhanced Properties list
File>Tools>Compare
I believe i have fixed it…got creative which could have been dangerous but I deleted the master files for the RM8. Then I said to create a new one from File>create a new file>import from ver 1-7…changed the name of that file to correspond to new RM name…and now my back ups are back to about the same 2K as it is in RM7. Technically I do not know why but it worked so maybe others with this issue can try this option. Was this OK to do?
Sure, and if you wanna investigate any differences further:
Command Palette>Count trees
Home>File Properties
Tools>Enhanced Properties list
File>Tools>Compare
They aren’t 2K, they are 2M.
Glad to see You posting again!
