RM9 Treeshare Timing out

Maybe I don’t understand how TreeShare works. I am trying to “treeshare” from RM9 to an EXISTING tree on Ancestry. The names of the trees are not the same. Is that a requirement?

Secondly: I tried to treeshare a RM9 file by making a new Ancestry file (through treeshare) with the same name. Upload hangs on media upload. I get less than 1% and Ancestry times out and a little message pops up to retry or cancel. My RM9 file stats:

This is not a huge file so why does it hang. If I eliminate the media, it uploads okay, but now I don’t have the media to go with the research.

Any suggestions?

TreeShare is a 1 to 1 file design, so you cannot TreeShare multiple databases.

TreeShare from Ancestry to RM. This will be 1 connect file.

Your RM9 database can be TreeShare to a “different” Ancestry tree.

Now you have a “Brown” and “Smith” files on both RM & Ancestry.

The Second question - just need to try to Upload from RM again.

Sounds like its hanging on some media. The problem would be which one. First, check if any media links are broken and if that makes a difference. Then I would look at any really large files and temporarily break those links by moving them from their current location. It should skip over large files automatically, but it’s best to rule that out. Then I would look for non-typical file extensions.

Thanks for your response. So I upload my RM9 file 1 to Ancestry and call it Upload. Then I download a different tree from Ancestry File 1 and call it RM9 file 2. I can only treeshare between RM9 file 1 and Ancestry file Upload or Ancestry File 1 and RM9 file 2. But I cannot cross treeshare between these four files. Do I have that correct?

I uploaded without the media files and it seemed to work fine. I clicked “only show changed files.” There were only files on the RM9 side. So I clicked “Add” for each file and accepted a bunch (100’s) of “adding media file.” When I got all done, I went to Ancestry and there was no file. No new tree. Nothing. Just the tree that was already there (not the same name) and no changes were made to it. I am clueless.

And another question. Does Roots Magic have a place where a person can upload their tree and no one will mess with it, but family members can see it and the sources and media without paying a king’s ransom?

You will only be able to TreeShare with whatever tree the database is connected to. Makes no difference if it was an upload or download. If you see a tree inside TreeShare then there is one on Ancestry. The only way that could not be happening is if you have more than one Ancestry login and it’s going to the wrong one. Try using the username and email to see if either make a difference.

RM hosts MyRootsMagic websites. It’s on the Publish page. You would be the only one able to update it. There is a size limit on the websites. You can also password protect it.

Correct since TreeShare is a 1 on 1 relationship between RM & Ancestry.

You CAN use the Compare feature in RM to view each file. There is a video on it.

Thank you! I will try that. I do have more than one Ancestry login.

Thank you. I think I understand the concept now. My old brain is not what it used to be. I have used the compare feature before and found it helpful.

Thanks again! I saw it on the RM website but I didn’t know if it was still available.
