I have used RM for many years, connected to my Google drive and I love it!
I can’t see from searching the topics here in the community if this has been asked before so here goes. Is there a way to the connect the RM App to my Google drive, similar to what it does with DropBox or would it require an Enhancement request? If an Enhancement would be needed, would it even be possible, seeing that the on the “App Store Screen” it appears that the app hasn’t been updated for many years?
I had a really bad experience with DropBox many years ago, and since then I’ve tried to avoid it. Plus, I really love the features and the free cost of my Google Drive.
I have attached a copy of the app store screen.
BTW: Being an amateur geneologist, I took the Vitals information for “Howard Smith Jr.” as found on the Preview screen (from the RM Apple App Store) and ran it through the RM Gazetteer. It seems that there is an error with the locations. I checked with the Gazetteer and “Hyrum, Cache County”(his birth), “Logan, Cache County”, and “Garland, Box Elder County”(his death); are all in the state of Utah and not the state of Iowa. I’m not sure who owns this tree but they need to check their sources because they have a problem!
Honestly, didn’t they think that it would get noticed in a RM Geneology community?
I’m pretty sure it would have to be an enhancement request. The RM mobile app itself as it is presently designed depends on the Dropbox app on the iPhone or iPad to gain access to the data.
The RM app is 10 years out of date (2015 last update). It might see your file if transferred in Finder but Dropbox should work and has a free 2GB account. RM is a read only app.
If you have your RM tree on Ancestry use their free iOS app. It is kept current and allows live editing along with hints etc. The app simply reads whatever tree you point it at on Ancestry.
IIRC, the mobile app requires a RM7 database file with .rmgc extension in the app-specific folder in the DropBox folder of the mobile device. iOS may be different than Android but the file manager of the latter that I’ve tried could not see that folder. RM10’s Save (Export?) to Dropbox converts from the incompatible RM10 format to RM7.
Thanks for all the responses. There were some great ideas that I was able to build on and I did some experimenting with it this afternoon.
I did create a new dropbox(DB) account (my old one has been locked because DB decreased my account limit size years ago as part of a promotion gone awry and they locked it, hence my disdain for DB, but that is another story and I digress…(Note to self:Deep Breaths, Think Happy Thoughts)), and I did the file export to Dropbox and it did work OK. I was able to send it right up to Dropbox in the right format like @TomH suggested, and the fact that it was on my Google drive was completely transparent.
However, I hadn’t thought about sending my tree up to my Ancestry account until @Rooty mentioned it. I guess I was too focused on making the RM Mobile App work and I hadn’t thought outside the box(pun kind-of intended ). Since RM 10 can import and export from Ancestry so easily, that idea worked well too. Also, since I already use the Ancestry mobile app alot it was a good fit. Thanks.
I decided it take these suggestions one step further and try one more thing. Since I also have the MyHeritage app on my phone, I created a GEDCOM file in RM and imported it to my MyHeritage account. It worked really well also.
Now I’ve got three options to try out and see what I like best. Thanks again.
Does anyone else have another way that they view their RM tree on a mobile device, besides the ones listed above that they would like to share? I was thinking along the lines of a GEDCOM viewer for an iPhone or Android, but again there are probably other ways too. ( For example, for many years I carried a MS Surface tablet that ran Windows. )
