I have what looks like duplicate people in my people list but they are the same person (same ID number). I discovered they were the same when I thought they were duplicates and tried to do a merge. Why are they showing up twice with the same ID number? When there are two there is a + sign next to one of them.
They are the same person. A plus (+) sign indicates this is an alternate name for the person.

Thank you. I also noticed they have the fact “Alternate Name” so I’m deleting those facts as I don’t like them showing up. Most are the same exact name.
You can turn off the display of Alternate Names in the Index Sidebar by clicking on the 3 dots and un-ticking Show Alternate Names.
I recommend keeping the “Show Record Number” because it helps figure out if a person is really a duplicate or a linking problem.
