why, how and what does this mean? there is really only one record; but the name and RM number show up like this for a number of my people?
The names with the + signs represent alternate names. You can turn off the display of the alternate names in the Index by clicking on the the 3 dots icon in the Index.

James Zedac CONNER is your Primary name for him. Open his Edit Person and you will see that you have also entered the other names for him. (perhaps a census recorded him as J.Z. CONNER).
Turn off alternate names as thejerrybryan suggested.
Or if you don’t need them ( or some of them), you can delete the alternate name fact
