Person identified as self

Hi, just started with RM10. Imported my tree from Ancestry. Been learning several things. I am struggling with a problem of the person identified as self. I have set my father as the Root of the tree and everything identifies him as that. But when I look at anyone in the tree it displays them as the relationship to my brother and my brother is identified as self.
Any insite on what is happening here?

Set Root is for person the database opens to.
Set Relationships is what you’re looking for.

That’s it thank you. Not sure the great value to this. Apparently it defines the relationship to me as self. I guess if I set the root person (not me) as self then the relationships would associate to him.

Help description for Set Relationships Set relationships

It defines the relationship of everybody else as well - your parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles, cousins, children, grandchildren, etc.

yes I understand. but it defines those relationships relative to me (or whoever) as self. Looking at the big picture of a family tree what does it matter the persons relationship to me (I am not the root). I see it is informational as I grow the tree. Thank you for info.

I truly am not seeing what the difficulty is here. If you set relationship correctly, then the relationship shown is going to be based on who you chose in the set relationship dialog. If you choose yourself, then all relationships will be based on you. For example, your parents will show as parents, your aunts and uncles will show as aunts and uncles. The root person has nothing to do with the relationships. They are all based on the person selected in the set relationship dialog. If I do something crazy like set myself as the base person in the relationship calculator I show as ‘Self’ in my profile, however if I change the base person to my third great grandfather, I show as ‘Third great-grandson’.

There is no problem or difficulty. The original question was answered several posts ago. Just thinking thru the use of this. No further response

is needed.

Since you seem to feel the need to think it through in a forum post, then you should expect that someone will respond. If you can’t figure out the use of this, then you probably don’t need it in your work, however most of us like to know what our relationships to others in the file are. Many of us also deal with other relatives that want to know how they and Person X are related. Which isn’t hard to figure out simply by changing the base person in Set Relationships…which again has nothing to do with root persons.
