Opening RM by double clicking an RM database in Windows File Explorer

I thought that the double click on a RM9 .rmtree that launched RM10 on its last-opened database was in no way contrary. All .rmtree files are associated with the RM10 app so it launched, checked its XML file and therefore opened it lást opened database as it was set to do. The RM9 XML file was not involved.

That a double click on a .rmbackup file should open any application is a red herring. I’m not aware that the installation of any version of RM made that association. I think it was user initiated as I have done with 7-ZIP.

I understand and agree with your analysis. I was just trying to make sense of Nancy’s results. Or maybe I need to study her results a little harder. :grinning:

Whatever version of Windows nkess is using displays the .rmbackup (File)Type differently in File Explorer than my Windows 11 with RootsMagic 9 does:

RootsMagic 9 Backup -vs- RMBACKUP File

Sorry guys-- should have stated Windows version 11 --RM all updated to latest versions…
and yes my .rmbackup (File)Type is different than yours which says RootsMagic 9 Backup and evidently @TomH 's says RootsMagic 10 Backup per his post in another thread a couple of days ago–all my .rmbackup (File)Type in RM 8, RM9 and RM 10 just say RMBACKUP FILE
as shown here

I did NOT set the DEFAULT for .rmbackup— the computer did and until a few minutes ago, every time I tried to find .rmbackup in default apps, it said it was NOT found but now it says ( sorry abt the magnification BUT wanted @thejerrybryan to be able to see it

Agree Tom that when you click on any rmtree no matter what version that the last database in RM 10 will open as RM 10 is the default for RM 8 RM9 and RM 10…

Sorry BUT NO–it was not user initiated–the computer picked the default app for rmbackup just like( after 3 days of having RM 10 installed) the computer picked RM 10 as the default for all .rmtree versions–I was NOT asked nor made any changes…

When I downloaded and was going thru the install for RM 10, it STRONGLY SUGGESTED that I get RID OF RM 9 BUT I kept it…
note-it did NOT suggest to remove RM 8— and when I installed RM 9, it never made this suggestion …
After the install was complete, I set up the Program Settings for the Folder as shown above…

So guys if you have RM 8, RM9 and/or RM10 on your computers with open last database checked in all , what do you get when you click on backup in Windows Explorer?

Win 10, only RM10 on this computer:

Not sure how “the computer” would know which to assign (as demonstrated by TomH dialog) IF RootsMagic installation process doesn’t default to doing so (in our cases). Wonder if the fact you’re using Windows Documents path subfolder might bring into play some of the special considerations that have always been applied to that system folder?

This thread suggests that it is a bad idea to have multiple versions of RM on your computer allowing wrong support files to be referenced. I have uninstalled as completely as possible RM 8 and 9 before installing the next new version after noticing some common file names on mac.

I think it depends.

I never open RM by double clicking an *.rmtree file. And I never enable the setting Open Last Database When Starting RootsMagic. I think that taking those two actions largely immunizes me from the problems being discussed in this thread.

I find it very useful at times to have RM7, RM8, RM9, and RM10 all installed at the same time. And uninstalling them apparently runs the risk of losing the placedb.dat file. My only concern is never to open an RM8 database with RM9 or RM10 and never to open an RM9 database with RM10 to avoid getting the database itself updated to the higher version. The same problem doesn’t exist with an RM7 database because an RM7 database cannot be opened in a higher version. Instead, it has to be imported and importing it leaves the original RM7 database intact rather than updating it.

RM7 makes sense for windows users and obsolete macs stuck on 32 bit Mojave but what is the value to RM 8 and 9 since 10 has replaced them. Only RM10 gets the latest bug fixes. Also the mac install dmg includes the places database which is a separate install on windows.

It’s typically not a separate install on Windows. But sometimes it becomes uninstalled and only then does it need to be reinstalled as a separate install.

The value is that sometimes a problem is discovered in RM10 and it can be useful to determine if the problem is new in RM10 or if the problem was already there in RM8 or RM9.

@TomH and @kbens0n --Tom, I see that you are backing up you files in OneDrive whereas I am doing a simple backup to the computer or other options–I do NOT use any Cloud Service…

This How do you want to open? box only shows up IF I am trying to open a new file/ document type – you said you only have RM 10 on your computer BUT I have RM 7- RM 10 on the computer and since RM 9 and RM 10 share some files ( according to the download/installation) perhaps that is why it did NOT ask me how I wanted to open rmbackup and Yes @kbens0n maybe it does have something to do with the special considerations set for the document folder-- I don’t know-- all I know is I was NOT asked…

Some of us had used Associations in RM 9 and some have customized facts-- NOT being sure what would happen to these 2 items on a conversion is one reason to keep RM 9-- another would be IF you opened RM 10 and for some reason couldn’t do somethings such as set relationships did NOT work for some in 1st version or had another issue-- you could then go back to RM 9…

I don’t think the location of a .rmbackup file has any bearing on which app is associated with it for opening. I have them in OneDrive, Google Drive and local drive, depending on what I’m doing. On my laptop, I have RM versions going back to 5. If I use “Open with” from the right-click menu on a .rmbackup file or opt to Change the default “Opens with” in the Properties window, I’m presented with 7-Zip File Manager, RootsMagic Genealogy Software, and “Look for an app in the Microsoft Store”. The RootsMagic option is to RM7, not 10, because I had made that association way back when and it is still in the Windows Registry but not as the primary one. AFAFIK, it would not be there if I had not put it there. And installations of all subsequent versions have not displaced it or added to it - could its presence have blocked what you got? I don’t know but the notebook did not get an association for .rmbackup with the installation of RM10.

I agree now and was just speculating. Here’s what I have since learned (for starters):
Any/All application(s) that have been chosen via right-click->Open With (Just Once) or double-clicked filenames that have prompted for Open With (Just Once) get added to the Registry under a Key named ApplicationAssociationToasts.

The above resulted from me “purposely” selecting both my text editor EditPlus to Open With (Just Once) and double-clicked with WinRAR to Open With (Just Once).
