Narrative Reports Rootsmagic 9 on Mac

Hi to you all, just joined Roots Magic and needing some advice please. I have been running narrative reports using NGSQ and I have just noticed that any people who are not married are not shown. Is this expected for NGSQ and NEHGS? They appear in the other options. I thought maybe it was something to do with the child, so I tried it for other families and once again anyone not married does not show up on Second generation.

I have checked this by running just one generation and the results are the same and shown below as an example.

John and Rebecca have 3 children and they are shown William, Elizabeth and James.

On the Second Generation page the facts and details are there for William and James the number even shows Elizabeth missing as William is 2 and James is 4 but Elizabeth 3 is not shown.

Is this to be expected for that report or it is it an error?

This is the standard behavior of NGSQ and NEHGS reports. Individuals who have a spouse or who have children are listed as children of their parents and also are carried forward to the next generation. Otherwise, they are not carried forward to the next generation. Because this is the standard behavior for the reports, this behavior is not a bug in RM.

A person does not have to have a Marriage fact to be carried forward. Having a spouse (really, a “partner”) is sufficient. And a person does not even have to have a spouse if they have a child. A person in RM can have a child without having a spouse. This is a common way to enter the data when the other parent is unknown.

For the most part, I like this standard behavior of NGSQ and NEHGS reports and I would not like it if every person were always carried forward to the next generation. For example, my most important reports are printed reports for family reunions where living people are included and everybody wants to be sure that their most recent grandbabies are included. In these cases, not carrying the youngest generation forward makes a lot of sense and saves a lot of paper.

But occasionally I have a person who for some reason I do want to carry forward even though they do not have a spouse or a child. For example, they may have a lot of facts or other data and displaying all these facts and data in the list of children looks totally terrible. Also, the basic sentence for people in the list of children is not under control of RM’s sentence templates, which I do not like. In these cases, there is a trick I use to get persons carried forward on a purely case by case basis. The trick is not supported by RM and involves direct manipulation of the RM database using SQLite. It requires programming skills and knowledge of the RM database schema.

I wish instead that there were simply an option where I could mark a person to be carried forward. I would not be happy with a report feature that would carry every person forward as an option for that report. To be effective, I think such an option needs to be on a person by person basis.

Fantastic, glad it was not just me or something I had selected in error.

Appreciate the reply, thank you.
