Marriage Record #

Looking for a “simple” way to display/report on Marriage Record # for individuals throughout searches and reports. I see you can choose to display it on a Marriage List but no other place. And when running Marriage List report it does not print individuals Record # even though you have that selected in the main settings. So, looking for the following:

  1. Display Marriage Record # for an individual/multiple views

  2. On a custom report creation, there is no option to select Marriage Record # (Record # is available)

Currently you need to run several reports and/or searches, export to Excel and manipulate the data and/or use MS Access for queries. Having unique number identifiers on records is very helpful if it can be easily accessed.

Below is a screenshot from the Marriage List report. Rec# is the Marriage record #, Husband is the same individual (record #) and Wife is both of the marriages. As you can see it does not display the Record # for persons name next to name even though that option is selected.

There is no “simple” way (or even a non-simple) way to gain any greater access to the family ID number other than that which you have already discovered. Well, I think it’s in a GEDCOM if you export a GEDCOM, but then you have to parse the GEDCOM and and match it back with all your other reports.

i’m curious about your use of Microsoft Access. Are you using Microsoft Access to manipulate data after you have already extracted it from RM, or are is Microsoft Access reading the RM database directly using ODBC? If the latter, you could get the family ID number that way.

If you are using ODBC, I strongly recommend using it only for queries and not for updating the RM database. It might sometimes work ok to update, but with OBDC there are many layers of data translation going on, too many for me to be comfortable for making updates. Excel can also be used to query an RM database through ODBC, with the same caveat.

I called it family ID rather than marriage ID because strictly speaking it has nothing to do with a marriage event. It’s just a database link between two people who might or might not ever have actually married. And I think really should be called something like a couple ID rather than a family ID.

Thanks for the quick response. I am using Access for data that I have already extracted from RM. I never felt comfortable connecting Access to RM via ODBC. I was hoping the Marriage Record # (aka Family ID number as you mentioned) would be accessible through reports/searches. I extract data as I find the report/search items I need I can do with the extracted data and not easily within RM.

there other tools to use – EXCEL (power query) and Power BI (they read only via a connector) - however the details for that conversation belong elsewhere than RM since its not recommended or supported by RM
