Combining uploaded trees

New here! I have uploaded a tree from My Heritage and one from Ancestry. I can’t figure out how to combine them into just 1 tree. I’m not looking to upload the new tree to Ancestry, just wanting to have only 1 tree on RM. Any advice is welcome!

You will have to merge the trees in a somewhat manual manner. Make a copy of which ever database is bigger - the one from MyHeritage or the one from Ancestry - and call it New or Master or Combined or some such name that meets your fancy. Then drag and drop everybody from the other database into the new Master/Combined database.

At this point, all the people from both databases will be in the new database, including their sources, citations, places, and media. But you will likely have duplicate people. RM has several ways to merge duplicate people. You could try the Automatic Merge, but it really only works for people that are absolutely identical. I think the better approach is the one called Duplicate Search and Merge. It finds potential duplicates, but then it allows (and requires) you to make the decision to merge the people or not. Immediately after merging each person, there is an opportunity to Edit the person and clean up any discrepancies that have arisen. I would recommend resolving any discrepancies as you go, rather than trying to go back and resolve them after the fact.

Depending on how big your databases are and on how many people they have in common, this could be a fast and easy process or it could be a long and painful process. But there really isn’t any other way.

After the people are merged, there likely are some duplicate places to merge and there may be some duplicate sources and/or citations to merge. But that’s usually a much lesser issue than is merging the duplicate people.

Thank you so much! I appreciate the help!

So far I’ve not been able to do this. The ged coms I’ve uploaded won’t open. Is there a setting to just open your tree and not “files”? Pretty frustrated here.

RM11 cannot Open a GEDCOM file. You Must use File>Import Data>Import from GEDCOM to get the data into a RM11 tree.

If you only want to look at the Gedcom, it is just a text file. Open it with any text editor or word processor. If you change anything in it, you must save the change as a text file with .ged ending. However, if you are trying to get it into your database, import it (generally into a new database is best) as BobC said.

I don’t know how to do this. I’m used to my heritage where I upload a ged com and end up with a tree. Please tell me how to do it.

Assuming you have the GEDCOM files on your disk already, do the following inside of RM.

File > Create New RootsMagic File

Import from RootsMagic 1-7, GEDCOM, or another Program

GEDCOM

At this point, it gets trickier. Mine already set up to import a particular GEDCOM file. You will probably have to browse to where your GEDCOM file actually is on your disk.

Use Windows File Explorer to browse to where your GEDCOM file really is on your disk.

Pick a folder to contain your RM database.

Give your database a name and click Save.

Be sure to do FILE→BACKUP , in your current main “working” RootsMagic database, before any GEDCOM import into it -or- DRAGnDROP into it.

This will ensure you can return to a known good version of your current main “working” database, if anything becomes confusing or goes haywire.
