Adding Ancestry Webhints Stores to RM11

When I find a Story web hint from ancestry, I have the option to add the story to to my RootsMagic file. When I select this, it adds the story as an HTML file in my media directory and then puts the story as a media items for that person. Since RM11 can’t display HTML files, I just see an icon that looks like this.

It would be more helpful if the story was downloaded as a note than as a media item. If downloaded as a media item, it would be more helpful if it was a PDF file or if RM included an HTML viewer so I could easily see the contents from within the program.

Actually, RM11 can display HTML files just fine, but there is a trick. Namely you click the Edit icon (the one that looks like a pencil or a crayon) rather than clicking on the View icon (the one that looks like a looking glass), and also rather than clicking on the thumbnail for the file.

In all truth, when you use the Edit icon, RM is not displaying the the file. Rather, it is having your Windows or Mac operating system to display the file. I actually use the Edit Icon to display media files 100% of the time, even for files that RM can display itself using the View icon. I simply like the way Windows displays files much better than the way RM displays files.

Thanks for the idea, but don’t you agree that Ancestry stories would be better in notes than in media?

This is something Ancestry would have to decide to change, especially since they no longer allow the uploading of HTML files. I’ve also found that not all story webhints on Ancestry will download so you end up with missing files.

It would be nice if Ancestry downloaded the text. When I encounter a media link, I typically copy/paste the text to an RM note or used Windows snipping tool to capture text (even on images) and paste it to RM notes. But I still attach the media link to the RM record.

It’s not as convenient, but can’t you click the HTML link and then copy and paste the text yourself? It’s not like you have to read the HTML file and type all the text back in from scratch.
