Periodically, there are questions about exactly when some newly entered data is saved into the RM database, or about how to cause some newly entered data to be saved immediately. I just now found such I situation that I don’t quite understand.
I was simply trying to change Cloyd’s Creek Cemetery, Loudon County, Tennessee to Cloyd’s Creek Cemetery, Blount County, Tennessee because I had wrong county. I was making the change in the main Place tab so the change would take effect everywhere I had made reference to the cemetery. But the change doesn’t seem to take. If I switch over to an Edit Person screen, it still shows the old county. I do not use Place Details, so this is the main Place entry.
How do I get the change to be saved? There is no check-mark to click or anything like that. There is no way to slide the place name panel back to the left because it is as far to the left as it will go.
I removed the filter for cloyd and highlighted a different place name. That did the trick, but it seems like a strange way to get the change to be committed to the database.
I wonder if that was a ‘did not refresh’ vs a ‘did not save ’ issue. Remember how the sidebar Index would not refresh’ until a different person far removed from the current focus person was selected?
I didn’t get a screen capture of the Edit Person screen which still showed the old place name at the same time the Place list was showing the new place name. I’ll play with it some more to see if I can create a scenario that’s completely repeatable. I’ll also look inside the database with SQLite to see what it shows. Sometimes, an SQLite query will show that the database has been updated even though an RM screen itself has not been refreshed.
Even so, the total absence of a check mark on the screen that can be clicked and the total absence of an unslide on the screen that can be clicked make me wonder what the cue is supposed to be in order for the save or refresh to take place.
I agree with TomH. There are several screens mentioned in other message postings over versions 8, 9, and 10 where a change is made but it does not appear on screen until you click on another fact or another one of the four icons on the left of the edit person screen or close the screen and reopen it.
On top of everything else, I can no longer recreate this exact situation. My sequence of clicks must be slightly different this morning than it was last night. But I do not know what is different. So I would prefer to close this discussion out for now, until and unless I have an exact sequence of clicks that has repeatable results.
I’ve had the checkmark not appear after splitting a place. The next place you try to edit it won’t show the checkmark. You need to move to another place and come back and the edit is saved. This has been reported.
