Unable to restore from Dropbox

I updated My Roots Magic 10 to 10.0.7.0 today. When I reopened RM, my file was gone. I backup in Dropbox, but when I attempted to restore it, a pop-up said “The document FamilyTreeGedcomJan2,2016(2025-6-21).rmbackup could not be opened. Roots Magic cannot open files of this type.” Has anyone else experienced this? I always backed up to my documents until this past January. I thought dropbox would be easier. I was wrong!

Try copying the backup outside of Dropbox and see if you use File, Restore from backup.

You don’t open backup files, you need to restore them. Backups are comprssed file. Restoring them decompresses the file.

However you file probably isnt gone. You need to navigate to where ever you store. Just because it might not be on the recents lost. It doesnt mean it isnt there.

I think that should work fine as long as you Restore rather than Open when you want to restore your backup file. I just tried it on a test database, and it worked fine.

That being said, I haven’t used RM’s “backup to Dropbox” option for years. With the “backup to Dropbox” option, the backup goes through the Dropbox API. That means that RM is sending data through the Dropbox software. As I said, I just tried it and it worked, but it seems awkward.

Instead, I just do a “normal” backup to a folder that’s inside my Dropbox folder. RM doesn’t send the data through Dropbox at all. It just writes it to your disk. Except that the folder on the disk actually is a folder that is being backed up by Dropbox. All in all, it seems to me to be a much simpler and easier to manage process. It may actually be potato vs. potahto, but I like simple.
