TreeShare of large file on Mac causes RM10 to hang

MadDog, I have already done that to no avail. I first reported this issue back under version 9. Several others have reported the same problem. One person said they can duplicate the problem at will based on the existence of a specific RM file. RM has indirectly admitted the problem exists, but so far, it has not been addressed.

Just installed the 10.0.4 update and tried to download a tree from Ancestry. Something has changed, but it still fails. It immediately says 100% with the first step highlighted and then locks the program requiring a force quit to exit RM.

Just installed the 10.0.5 update and tried to download a tree from Ancestry. Same issue as 10.0.4 and it still fails. It immediately says 100% with the first step highlighted and then locks the program requiring a force quit to exit RM.

Just installed the 10.0.6 update and tried to download a tree from Ancestry. It started the download, got to 52% and then locked the program requiring a force quit to exit RM. This is beyond frustrating that this issue has remained unresolved for as long as it has.

thanks to your comment realized there was an update. Installed and perhaps this will fix the recent complete instability of RM on my M4 MBA. I have the reverse problem of uploading a 400 person tree to ancestry which always fails if media or sources are included. RM on mac has a long standing timeout issue and only works for me on a fast connection with tiny files.
Did a fresh FTM->gedcom with media->RM import->ancestry with media and sources. The double file extension is fixed. Login to ancestry and familysearch now persist.

ancestry upload stalled at 88% on my 389 person tree. Tried without media or sources and worked. However the treeshare window does not close with the close button. You have to use the red gumdrop button top left. A tree without media or sources is sufficient to get hints so if RM 1006 is now otherwise stable it will be useable.

The RM timeout with Ancestry is an OLD problem on mac and I do not expect a fix.

Rooty, I hope this update resolves your issue. Until the issue with downloads is resolved, RM is totally useless for me.

What mac software are you using currently instead of RM? FTM 2024 is solid but less powerful with small text and big price, macfamilytree has a truly awful tree view and lacks ancestry hints and reunion is very dated with no hint feature.

I also use FTM 2024 and agree with you on the text and price. I have also looked at MacFamilyTree and Reunion. Like you, I found both lacking. I have used FTM off and on since the Banner Blue days, but eventually settled on The Master Genealogist. I still haven’t found anything that compares to it, but it is no longer available. I have switched to putting all my info on-line. My primary tree is on Ancestry and I update my information on both FamilySearch and WikiTree. I was using RM to identify islands and inconsistencies in place names.

@LarryD I’d suggest you do the download on a PC, then copy the change file I noted above to your Mac and it should work fine. As I mentioned it doesn’t have anything to do with network speed, but the slowness of the maintenance of the {username}/Rootsmagic/AMT/AT_nnnnn.DT8 file. I assume they need a newer SQLite driver or better configuration of it for Mac.

I should note I see a new AT_HINTS.DT8 database in 10.0.6. Not sure what that is but it seems to be the same configuration as AT_nnnnnn.DT8.

Keith, I appreciate the suggestion, but I don’t have a PC and don’t feel I should have to go through that type of process to complete the download. RM should either fix the issue or admit they don’t really support Macs. I saw Rosetta is being deprecated with the next MacOS release and that may well be the end of RM’s Mac development.

Few mac users would have a discarded windows pc lying around and we are used to software working well. It is definitely a RM issue as FTM uploads the same files with no problem. however a small 400 person database with media and sources excluded does work and lets me get ancestry hints. This issue plus the impending end of Apple Intel code support makes using RM quite problematic.

Not disputing it’s a RootsMagic problem, just suggesting a workaround. Someone may have a friend or relative with a PC they could use.

I don’t think the Rosetta support will be much of a problem, it’s not like RootsMagic wrote in assembler. Support ends in 2027, which gives the Delphi folks a couple years, and the RM just needs to recompile. Delphi already has support for Windows ARM and Apple Silicon so I don’t believe it’s going to be an issue.

I don’t see the Rosetta depreciation as an issue, Delphi already supports Apple Silicon. RM may need to distribute an Apple Silicon only and a Universal version like many companies do, but that’s just a separate build.

I didn’t like having a use a PC for my DB when the citation bug hammered my Rootsmagic and Ancestry trees, and I’m quite disappointed RM hasn’t addressed the issue. I’ve given them a copy of my DB and access to my Ancestry tree. I can reproduce the problem at will (and make it go away at will), so I’m a bit dumbfounded why it hasn’t been addressed.

Just installed the 10.0.7 update and tried to download a tree from Ancestry. It started the download, got to 51% and then locked the program requiring a force quit to exit RM.

Just installed the 10.0.8 update and tried to download a tree from Ancestry. It started the download, got to 49% and then stalled. I was able to close the window and exit RM without a force quit. I suppose that is progress.

Ancestry upload will probably work for moderate sized trees if you exclude media and sources. For my 400 person tree on M2 and M4 macbook air including either will stop upload.

Just installed the 10.0.9 update and tried to download a tree from Ancestry. It started the download, got to 48% and then stalled. The close button did not work, but I was able to close the window using the red dot and then exit RM without a force quit.

Just installed version 11 and tried to download a tree from Ancestry. It started the download, got to 47% and then stalled. The close button did not work, but I was able to close the window using the red dot and then exit RM without a force quit.

Just installed the 11.0.1 update and tried to download a tree from Ancestry. It started the download, got to 46% and then stalled. The close button did not work, but I was able to close the window using the red dot and then exit RM without a force quit.

Does this mean that your Ancestry tree did NOT download for RM support or something else.

Also you state: keithcstone (in this thread) claims to have isolated it to a file in the database.
Do you mean a ā€œrecordā€ in the database and did you take action to fix?

Upload your RM data to a New tree. Once uploaded, disconnect tree, then download.
