I frequently find when I use treeshare to transfer sources from RootsMagic to Ancestry or vice versa, when I click on the source icon for a fact on a given person and the screen comes up to compare the sources, there will be several sources which seem to be identical on each side and maybe one or two that are different. The ones that appear to be identical should be absolutely identical because they were originally downloaded to RM from Ancestry. What I want to do is copy over the different ones, but when I try to do that, RootsMagic transfers not only the different ones but also the ones that already exist on both platforms. This results in duplicate sources on the receiving platform that I then have to manually remove. Am I missing something?
just for clarification are you sure there are no duplicate in RM – you might need to Merge duplicate sources and/or citations in RM (hold of before we know more)
Kevin
We had to change the source/citation ID that we looked at some point after RM7. Sorry, can’t recall which version now. If you have an older tree on Ancestry that difference in IDs for comparison won’t identify it as an existing source that you have.
@Kevin, there are no duplicates in RM. @rzamor1, I am a new user. All of the activity relating to this problem has occurred in the recent few weeks. If I go ahead and do the “update existing record…” and then look at the duplicate sources it creates, they look exactly the same as far as I can tell.
Did you merge sources and citations since then?
Thank you rezmor1. It must have been something like that, because I did a test where I made sure that RootsMagic and Ancestry had an identical source for an event and then added a new source for the event on RM and then updated Ancestry with TreeShare and RM recogized the already existing identical source and added only the new source to Ancestry. It will take me some effort to sort out the sources that are nominally the same, but must have some subtle differences in the citations, but at least I know that RootsMagic will do it correctly if the sources are precisely identical on both trees. Thanks again for your interest and help.
