Transfer RM from external drive to PC

I have backed up my Roots Magic program to an external hard drive. My computer has crashed and the borrowed laptop I’m using will not open the program (Chromebook). I can view my docs and photos on the external hard drive but not Roots Magic. Can you tell me what type computer windows system support RootsMagic? So when I connect my external hard drive with the program on it and click on it, will it transfer the program to the new computer or do I have to start all over again? The old computer that crashed is useless. It just twirls. I want to get a laptop or computer that will support and open RootsMagic. I guess I’m asking for suggestions on what to get that will support this program. Thank you.

Chromebooks will not run Rootsmagic. You will need either a Windows machine or a Mac. When you get a machine, then you will need to download and install Rootsmagic on it. After install you will have access to your data again. If it is the basic file, it should open with no problem. If you have a backup file (made from within the program) you will need to restore it.

What i suggest is that you get your choice of machine then come back and some can explain the rest. Pretty much any Windows 10 or 11 machine or any Mac running Monterey or later will work. Depending on your budget, I would get the most memory and disk space possible.

I would recommend downloading RM from the RM Web site on your new computer and installing again. Your product key will work on the new computer.

RM doesn’t work on a Chromebook. Only a Mac or Windows pc runs RM.

As the other have suggested – need a windows computer - preferably W11 compatible due to EOL for W10. You could get a laptop or desktop – my last two new computers were W11 desktops purchased this year and both were “refurbished” from reputable sellers (Amazon and NewEgg)

Of course $400 range might be a lot for some people budget but get one that will work for you for several years.

This one is an I7
