RootsMagic and Linux

My desktop is not Windows 11 compliant. I run RM 9 on both the desktop and a laptop that I am upgrading to W11. I may just buy a refurbished W11 desktop, but an alternative is to switch to Linux. That might be feasible if I can still easily synchronise user files, but also if all Apps can be run on Linux.

So, can RM 9 or 10 (and future upgrades) be run from Linux, eg via things like Wine?

Looking at some discussions, at https://community.rootsmagic.com/t/sqlite-rm9-and-linux-mint-cinnamon/12786 I see that one issue is that RM is 32-bit, but that post was in Oct 2021 about RM 8. Q1) are RM 9 and 10 64-bit? Q2) if I go to Linux will I also be able to run RM7?

While waiting for Linux users to wade in… I can say that there is a recent article How to easily run Windows apps on Linux with Wine | ZDNET

It sounds like you may be a Linux novice, so they’ll perhaps have more direct knowledge of whether to use 32-bit or 64-bit (yes, RM is available in either) and how to approach things.

Another consideration that is tricky about the last couple of RootsMagic versions is that, to use/sync RM with Ancestry and FamilySearch Family Tree, the program needs to use a Windows Edge browser technology for two-factor authentication. This is where that is discussed for Wine-> Verb request: Microsoft Edge WebView2 Runtime · Issue #2226 · Winetricks/winetricks

You could also run RM on your laptop only and connect from your desktop Linux machine using remote desktop protocol (RDP). The need for data syncing would be eliminated too. However, RM would only be available on the desktop while the laptop is up and running.

Another solution that extends the life of your desktop PC by up to three years is to get the paid Extended Security Updates. Sure, it’s not free, but still more economical than buying a new computer.

I bought a 32 gb 1tb Dell small factor desktop for my wife for about $300 with tax and shipping It not for gaming (weaker graphics ) but it great work business app machine – you can find them on Amazon and other sites.

The WINE wiki says anything after RM8 will not run.

You are left with having to run a VM in Linux.

I would love to see a Linux version of RM so I can dump windows forever!

agreed. RM7 runs like a champ in Linux. Anything past that is garbage…which is a shame. I would love to make the switch to Linux as well for good

If you are just looking for a data entry machine and light computing, I have a solution that may fit the bill just fine. I run two mini pc’s for various things and as long as you are not gaming heavy, they work great!

I will not post a link to the product (don’t think it is allowed) but you look on Amazon, check out Kamrui computers.

Hi all.

What would be wonderful would be a docker install. Not on the cards is it? There is a huge number of users in the “Self Hosting” community who are very interested in the topic, or people who would like to be able to run this in Azure/AWS/GCP instances who are limited to opensource projects like Grampsweb etc.
