My older Kindle Fire is not working well for either RM on/off line and Ancestry.
Would like recommendations or even just suggested system requirements you have found work on “non-Mac”.
Just beginning with RM-10, Desktop is a older but not ancient Dell
Prefer FireFox browser, but if forced can adjust. Do not have/want a “smart phone” so I suspect (but would happy to be corrected if needed) that the “To Go” app would not be a solution =
Are you wanting to run the RM App on a device or the desktop version? The RM App is only available for iOS devices, so you would need an iPad or iPhone. There is no Android app which the Kindle Fire would have used in the past.
For a desktop version you would need something that runs the full version of Windows if you are non-Mac.
as noted, no Mac involved here.
Not clear perhaps, I only mentioned the Kindle fire since that is what I currently have and am trying to budget to replace with another device that will allow more comfortable use of both RM & Ancestry.
Ah, I wondered if that might be the intent. In that case I might have an idea for you to consider … use a remote desktop control app such as VNC.
Your desktop PC would remain powered on and internet-connected. Your tablet would then use a remote desktop app to connect to the PC and control it from afar. In that way, the full RM install, Ancestry online access, etc would remain available to you. (You could, of course, still use the Ancestry mobile app as well.)
No, I hate phones and tablets when larger screens and bigger keys benefit older eyes and fumbling phalanges. Just a low cost Windows 11 option versus the higher-priced big brands w/ approximately similar specs.
iPad would be the best tablet and the Air model is cheaper than the Pro. However consider a light weight 15" laptop: decent screen size; compact; portable; full computer OS capability. Macbook Air would be an excellent choice but a Windows laptop would be somewhat cheaper if you can tolerate the hardware/software quality.
@wheat don’t know what you are interested in but if buying from a retail type store ( online or off)–keep in mind that they have special deals at various times during the year-- Thanksgiving being the biggest but nowadays the Thanksgiving sales start in OCT and early November,
There is also around July 12 where Amazon does their big sale ( Black Friday in July) and usually a lot of retailers also run big sales.. Not endorsing Amazon or any other company…
Seem like Memorial day there should be some sales and 4th of July.
As for going direct to a manufacturer, you have to sign up for their emails as their sales are less often and unpredictable except for Thanksgiving.
Also, consider the Microsoft Surface range of Windows tablets. They run full-fat Windows (Intel versions), so there are no restrictions on the applications you can run. They are not cheap when new, but you can pick up bargains second hand.
Something that supports pen input is useful as RM10 is not designed specifically with “touch” features like the iPad version would be. I run RM10 on an older Surface Pro X (SQ2 ARM64) and it works great with 32-bit version of RM10. That model of Surface is fanless and pretty powerful too, so the one of the most tablet-like of the Surface devices.
You beat me by a few years but I also learned via teletype machine, although I got to try out one of the first version Apple Macintosh machines. It was revolutionary at the time because it had a screen.
My millennial kids remember what life was like before the internet, but my grandkids are digital natives. Crazy how fast things have changed in one lifetime.
