I downloaded my Ancestry Tree onto RM in order to create new smaller trees.
For example how can I form a tree for all the descendants of one of my g g grand parents into one tree using RootsMagic 10.
I have seen how it was done in RM 9.
When I did it I only got one generation of descendants.
Thank you
Susan
Most of us would likely not want to break up our trees in such a manner as a lot of families have multiple overlaps between families, especially as you go back multiple generations. You might want to use color coding to differentiate between your different great grandparent lines.
As far as downloading, make sure to pick the number of generations you want. Versions 9 and 10 should work the same.
Technically I think you mean a separate database.
The answer yes you can – but why? (unless giving to someone else)
once you get back several generations – you might be surprised to find on many cousins married in (either to each other or both back to me)
If you need to focus on one group – (of descendants – you can use groups and/or colors for that).
Thank you mscheffler, I will keep my original large tree. I haven’t done colour coding. I must back and study that.
Thank you kevyc1985, My intention is to keep my original tree. Yes I want to give the smaller tree(s) to other relatives. So I need to separate them. Then export to Gedcom etc for sharing.
Ancestry does not have a tool to split a tree. My research led me to RootsMagic to split my tree. It looked manageable until I tried doing it. I am looking for the steps to do it successfully on RM 10. I am new to RootsMagic. Thank you for taking the time to reply
Say you want to give your tree to a cousin and do not want to give your husband’s line, you would use “Unlink” from spouse to create separate trees then you could create a GEDCOM of your line using whatever criteria you wanted. Always make a backup and a copy before starting and try on the copy to make sure your results are ok. Better safe than sorry.
I think database might work for me. I will work on it and let you know. I see drag and drop is in that section. I had bee unable to find it.
Thanks for reminding me Bob… Backup is very important.
If your goal is to create the smaller databases for sharing, then you could just keep the larger database for yourself. But I don’t think that’s your issue.
It really does work in RM to copy a family line from one database to another and to include multiple generations in the copy. it’s usually done with drag and drop. You drag and drop one person and the drag and drop process will prompt you for options. It sounds like the option you need to choose is Descendants and then you choose a large number of generations. Have you tried that?
