[Solved] Want a way to easily jump to Person's siblings

I often want to locate and add info to someone’s siblings.

The right-click “Jump To” function only offers some websites, not related people.

The “Edit Person” window shows the parents, siblings etc but has no way to jump to the personal record of any of them.

==> Please give us a way to jump to siblings, at least.

[This seems like a basic function. Am I missing something? Not an experienced RM user.]

The upper left Details pane allows clicking on parents, spouses, children

Actually, it does.

Click on the down chevrons next to the spouse and/or parents. Clicking on the down chevron next to the spouse lets you jump to the spouse or children. Clicking on the down chevron next to the parents lets you jump the the parents or siblings.

Also, I usually run RM with the Family tab visible in the sidebar, and it lets you jump to spouse, children, parents, and siblings very quickly.

Thanks again. I would never have found the chevron method eg Parents to get to Siblings - I kept trying to click on the Sibling’s name where it appeared (and seemed like an active entry).

The Family in the sidebar is a good tip too; I’ve been using just the Index view there to move around.

I’ll re-title this request too as “Solved”.

“The upper left Details pane allows clicking on parents, spouses, children”

Is this yet another way? I can’t find a Details pane except in the Edit Person window, and it has no such choices.

Clicking relations and names takes You to them.

He is talking about the top half of the sidebar, and yes it’s another way. You have to click on either the Parents tab or the Spouses tab.

which Share Fact (like for Census) could take advantage of this to add many at once (but Not same role)

It is in the RootsMagic Explorer window of RM8/9/10 where you can select people for things sharing facts and lots of other stuff as well. It isn’t well known, but RM7 had a feature in the RootsMagic Explorer window where you could select people from something that looks more or less like the Family tab. It was a bit clunky actually to use it, but it was there and it worked. It was much easier to use than anything in RM8/9/10 to accomplish the same kinds of selections.

The RootMagic Explorer window in RM8/9/10 no longer has that feature. What it has instead is a right hand panel that has a Details tab, a Spouses tag, and Parents tab that follows the same model as the top half of the side panel. To me, the right hand panel in the RootsMagic Explorer window is the culprit for this problem in RM8/9/10.

First of all, it doesn’t show parents, siblings. spouses, and children all at the same time as does the Family tab in the side bar. Instead, you can only see parents and siblings, or spouses and children. You have to choose which by choosing the Parents tab or the spouses tab. Second of all and much more important, even though you can choose to see either Parents and siblings or Spouses and children, you can’t do any selections. You still have to go back to the left hand panel of RootsMagic Explorer to make your selections. And using the left hand panel of RootsMagic Explorer to make your selections for Census is painful indeed. It doesn’t matter whether you are copying a Census fact or sharing a Census fact. The selection process is equally painful either way.

The recommendation from RM is to use the Family option on the left hand side of the RootsMagic Explorer screen. But that selects all the children, including those that might already have died or that might already have married and moved out or that might not have been born yet. And it doesn’t select anything like the parents of the head of household or the in-laws or the head of household or anything like that. So it’s an area that’s in great need of improvement. I think the solution is in the vein of showing a full Family tab type view in the right hand panel of the RM Explorer screen and then supporting selections on the right hand panel of the RM Explorer screen using check boxes.

I have described my current work around before, and it’s bizarre. But it totally works and it’s much faster and easier than trying to fight through the problems in the RM Explorer screen. Namely, I have a special group defined that’s always there and never gets deleted. It’s a rule group that has a rule that can never be satisfied, so if I refresh it then it’s emptied out even though the group is still in place. I also have a Saved Search which simply picks everybody in my special group that’s empty all the time. So what’s that all about. It surely sounds pretty worthless.

Well, what I do just before copying a Census fact is to go into the Edit Person screen for each person who needs to receive a copy of the Census fact add them to the special group manually. That is simple, easy, and fast. Then I do a copy of the Census fact which throws me into RM Explorer. It turns out that RM Explorer cannot do a Mark based in a group (which makes no sense), but it can do a Mark based on a Saved Search which in turn is based on my special group. So I use the saved search to tell RM Explorer who to Mark to receive the copy of the Census fact. I guess it’s not fair to say it’s simple because it’s so convoluted. But it’s easy and fast. And it’s very reliable. But surely RM could support a better way.

By the way, my trick does not work well for sharing, although it seems like it would. The problem with sharing is that you need to be able select a role that can be different for each family member. Probably what you would have to do with sharing a Census fact would to go back and reset all the roles manually for each person. But that’s also true if you use the RM recommendation to use the Family option for marking in the RM Explorer Window.

thanks – that basically what I have found – wanted to know if I was missing anything
I only use Shared Census facts (unless very unique situation).
This is the way I want it for many reasons despite FS nor Ancestry recognizing it

I have shared census events that I duplicated. Can I merge them?

Can NOT merge facts.

Thank you. It makes sense now that I recognized I was sharing the owner with herself. She needed only share with her children & other significant individuals.
