I’m trying to open an old rmgc file in RM 9.1.6.0 on MacOS. I open it from RM 9 and get the dialog saying that RM needs an rmtree file and will create one and bring in the data. I hit OK but nothing happens. RM 9 does not open the file and if I look on the hard drive there’s no new rmtree file. How do I get the conversion to work?
You can’t open the file in the normal sense. You have to import an RMGC file. File → Import Data → Import from RootsMagic 1-7… → RootsMagic Version 1-7. Choose your file to import, give name it appropriately and RM will pull it in.
First of all before converting any file its a good idea to keep a separate back up and in separate folders. /rm9 & rm10 for example
OK, that’s not what the error message said but when I created the new file it gave me the opportunity to import and that worked. Thanks!
I understand that you have the new file, but I’m still checking. After clicking OK it should have taken you to the location where you select the folder to create the new file. If you didn’t look at the top you may have missed that the wording changed and thought it was the same page.
When I just tried opening the rmgc file and got the message saying RM will create the file for me nothing happened. No file dialog appeared. When instead of trying to open the rmgc file I just created a new file from scratch it gave me the choice to import the rmgc file and everything worked fine. The problem in the process was the message saying that RM would create the file and do the conversion but then didn’t.
Can you give me a screen shot? I think its just switching to the page where you select the folder to create the database in.
I see, you are correct. It looks pretty much like the screen before it so I did not notice the change in the title to “Create a New RootsMagic file”. So I guess it does work after all.
