RM11, Windows11
I just got an error message I’ve never seen before: “Only 3 edit screens may be open at once”, with only an “OK” button to press. How do I fix this without closing out of RM?

unless you have some edit it process you might have an edit in process is should be safe to close RM
the edit screens do appear at bottom of window and you can go that person and finish any work then close each person.
What action(s) were currently (and in the recent past) being carried out by you? Context may be helpful.
The key point here is that it is possible to have more than one Edit Person screen open at the same time. This is a feature, not a bug. It was introduced in RM8 and has been carried forward through all subsequent versions of RM including RM11.
This feature sounds sort of neat in theory, but I have never actually found it to be of any practical value when I have tried to make use of it on purpose. On the other hand, you can sometimes find yourself with more than one Edit Person screen open at the same time by accident. It’s hard to describe all the exact ways this can come about, but it can. In any case, there is a limit of three Edit Person screens open at the same time. If you encounter that situation unknowingly and then try to open an Edit Person screen, it will be the fourth you are trying to open and you will get the message to the effect that you can’t open any more Edit Person screens because three of them are already open.
You don’t have to shut down RM to get out of this situation. Your Edit Person screens that are open will be listed along the bottom of the screen. You can click on each of them in turn to open them, and as soon as you open them you can close them. You can’t close them with a right click or anything like that.
I suspect that there are RM users who love this feature and who make frequent use of it. And I may someday discover a really good reason for using this feature on a regular basis. But so far, the utility of the feature hasn’t clicked for me. I suspect that the feature would be of most use if your computer has a very large screen, or better yet, if your computer has multiple very large screens.
was not at computer earlier to provide screenshots. I do wish those “ buttons had more contrast and stood out. I would not think there are very usable for older eyes on 15” laptop
I now see the names of the 3 profiles being edited at the bottom of the screen.
When I click on them I can close the edit windows to avoid the “no more than 3 edit screen” error message.
Agree that the tiny names at the bottom of the screen are hard too see. Perhaps the error message could be more informative, telling users to look at the screen bottom and close them?
Also, the task bar at the bottom of the screen in Win 11 fully obscures the names of RM’s open edit screen.
I respectfully suggest the names of the open edit screens be moved to a higher position on the RM screen so that the task bar does not hide them.
Looks like you need to reduce the height of the RM Window. If you were full screen they would still show.
it might be your laptop or monitor in part.
Do you have zoom screen or anything like that?
I usually prefer to offer at least a potential solution when commenting on a problem such as this one. But in this case, I don’t know what solution I would suggest. That little bar at the bottom of the screen is essentially invisible, even when it is not covered up. I don’t know how to fix it. My personal workaround is to strive never to have more than one Edit Person screen open at the same time.
this is what mine looks like when I have 3 – I wish they more like buttons that had good contrast (more so for low vision people)
I understand screen real estate is important but even on 24” monitor that bar is too thin also in my opinion
As a long-time software developer, I’ve always taken the approach that instead of just reporting an issue/error, provide the opportunity to remedy the situation. In this case it would be most helpful instead of just issuing an error message but display a dialog that identifies the error and then a list of the three edit person dialogs that are currently open and prompt the user which they would like to close before opening the requested edit person window.
The simple, straight-forward solution is a better-crafted error message.
Maximum (3) Edit Person screens already open. Close others below at program status bar.
You can auto hide the task bar so that it ducks down out of sight.
ich muss gestehen, dass ich bislang nichtsvon dieser nützlichen Funktion wusste ![]()
btw Wie kann man in RM die FSID in die Zwischenablage kopieren?
Open the Edit Person screen and click on the 3 dot menu and select Copy FamilySearch ID. There is also a copy button on the FamilySearch Person Tools, Share Data tab.
I use 3 edit windows all the time and often wish for a fourth. Mostly this comes in handy when cleaning up some source/citations and you can copy details back and forth.
