Newbie having some basic questions about saving, printing and updating

I am new to Rootsmagic - this is my first post. Please bear with me.

Using Rootsmagic v10 and downloaded a family tree from FamilySearch.
About filemanagement:
a. I am sure I am overlooking something. Went back and forth but can not find a kind of “File > Save”.
Backup, okay, but just a File>Save…
IF it is available, where to find it? Maybe it is automatically saved?

b. With the tree from FamilySearch on screen: how to update automatically?
e.g. when parents are missing and have been added to FamilySearch I need to go through a few steps so as to more or less manually update RM (retrieve data from FamilySearch, do some clicking to add missing data into RM)

Merging:
I have two trees, my father+ancestors and mothers+ancestors. 2 different .rmtree files.
I believe merging is described in “Merging two large RM databases with some of the same people in it”. Or is there a better way?

Print of all data
After merging, is there a way to print all data, i.e. names of brothers, sisters, parents, uncles, etc.

Many thanks.

I can’t really help with Family Search but the RM database automatically saves all changes immediately - there is no manual save facility. Accordingly if you make a mistake you either have to reinstall your latest backup (and lose all the changes you made) or do it manually.

I don’t know a lot about Family Search but I am aware that you do not have a personal tree on it but share a portion of a global tree. Accordingly if anyone changes someone on the global tree it changes ‘your’ tree too. Well worth checking the sources for those others people have added.
The tree share icon is bottom left of screen for Family Search

Because RM utilizes SQLite as the database file storage mechanism, it doesn’t and cannot use all your computer’s memory to hold the incoming data. So, it buffers the incoming and inserts chunks into the database (called committing) by automatically syncing, with that file storage, and flushing the data to disk to try to ensure data safety in case of a computer crash.

Welcome! It’s ok to be new. We all were at one time.

RootsMagic has quite a few options for printing reports, charts, etc. You can see them if you look in the Publish section. For your specific ask, you probably want the “Individual List” report.

Be aware that many of the reports, etc generate based on who the current Person focus is. So, for example, if you want to print a fan chart with your paternal grandfather at the base, you’d first go to him in the main interface.

You may have noticed on the Home screen in RM that it’s chunked up into sections. One of those is “Help and Support”. Be sure to check there when you have questions too. I recommend spending some time watching the RootsMagic videos they offer.

And this community board has a Search function where a lot of your questions will probably already have been discussed a lot. For example, there are a number of posts about merging databases.

Also, there are some great folks here that have developed external database tools for advanced efforts. Among them are @RichardOtter and @TomH .

Both gentleman and their tools have saved me effort and headaches more than once.

Hi Kevin, am hoping that you can clarify something for me.

It seems to me that the RM 8+ UI introduced a variation to the normal SQLite db behavior that you describe in several screens where, after making edits, the user is presented with icons to save or cancel the edit. And as I recall, in some scenarios, it was possible to exit the person or thing being edited in such a way that the “in-progress edits” did not get committed. (Perhaps a better way to say that is that the “cancel” action occurred without actually “clicking” the cancel button. )

My rule of thumb for several years has been to click the “Green Checkmark” to save the edit whenever I see it presented. However, I just tried to recreate this problem and could not, so I am not sure whether it’s still a valid concern.

Firstly, my answer was more tailored to the concept of where to find it and about Save after a bulk download from FamilySearch.

As to your focus about RM writing manually entered data, as far as I understand, there are no other ways to avoid a write, but for programmed offering to cancel. I believe all other mouse/keyboard actions result in those write actions in situ.

Many thanks for the responses and a special thanks to KimberlyGreen for the tips on ‘Publish’ and the videos. Just found the RootsMagicTV Youtube-channel.

Still have a lot to learn, that’s for sure.

Again thanks!
