Using rootsmagic with Family search

Dear All

I am trying to work out how to use Rootsmagic 10 with Familysearch Familytree. It seems to be very powerful and useful tool. However, although I can do certain things like find matches and look at the shared data I get my self confused when trying to share data and how some of the screens are laid out, for instance, parents and children are not necessarily shown opposite each other in Rootsmagic and Familytree. How do put my data into FamilyTree and FamilyTree data into Rootsmagic. I have found an old youtube video for this for Rootsmagic 6, and got some ideas but things look different with version 10. For instance version 6 shows how to do a automatic search to find matches, can this be done with version 10? I assume so but how. Any way enough waffling from me!! Are there instructions, videos etc. out there which can help me. If so, can any one point me in the right direction.
all help will be much appreciated.

King Regards

Stephen

You can access them through the RM home screen

One means is to press F1 function key (Help), while the program is open, for “context-aware” help info. It knows where You are in the program and opens online help, for RootsMagic 10, related to that particular functionality. Same from any other places in the program screens.

So going to Publish>Online>Family Search Central> and then pressing F1 will open help explanations about the functionality there.

The automatic searches no longer work with RM versions prior to RM10 which I find unfortunate since my version of choice is RM7. What I did was export my entire database to RM10, then did the automatic matching. Since I have a 309,000 database it can take from 12 to 18 hours. But once matched, the hints show up in RM10. Since I want to keep using RM7, I use two laptops to compare the matches.

I add very little to the FamilySearch Family tree from RM10 since I am not very good at correcting the errors/differences I find when I match. Do be aware that there are lots of errors in any large shared tree, so one has to be careful in assuming what you find there is correct. I mainly use the matches for hints which I then try to verify before adding to my primary database in version 7.

In RM10 you begin the matching by clicking on the FamilySearch icon at the bottom of the PEOPLE view and select to automatch. With the two views from the people view open, Click on the familysearch icon next to information you want to copy from one screen to the other. Beware of the fact it is easy to make mistakes and hard to correct them as you are copying back and forth. I attempt to not make things worse than they sometimes seem to be in the familysearch side.

Actually version 9.01 or higher still works. However that doesn’t do much since you, like me, still use RM7.

Dear all

Thanks for your help with this.
I did not realise about the F1 key and find it really helpful. I have never used the automatic search but seeing it used in the rootsmagic 6 video I feel that it would still be a help.

Best Wishes to you all

Stephen.
