In my database I have a husband, wife and their daughter. If I look at the husband in Edit Person view, I see the birth of the daughter listed (Show relative events checked). However, if I switch to his wife, I don’t see the daughter listed anywhere, even with “Show relative events” checked. Unchecking and re-checking makes no difference. Most other couples show children listed on both husband and wife pages, but some are like my example. Am I missing a setting?
Does the siblings of the wife show on her events ?–on the dau does it show the death of her mother in her events? I would try running the database tools and see if that makes a difference-- other wise try unlinking either the daughter from her parents or the mother from the hubby or the dau – then link them back again.
Once in a while, I have had glitched where I had a child linked to dad BUT when I ran a report, she was NOT listed-- this was actually a different program-- so I unlinked her and linked her back and everything was fine…
I have no facts for the wife, other than that she was married to the husband (no date info), so maybe that inhibits RootsMagic from showing any relative info, in the case her daughter’s DOB.
Depending what version – If RM11 – I would look at LifeSummary and see if children are listed there as expected - almost sounds like you have child/parent relationships wrong (or two similar people ) I would also turn on RIN (if you have off to confirm things)
Might look like this
Two things are “key” to Show relative events and both affect what is shown. They are the existence of events (when you add a Fact Type(s) that are relative) AND event dates (when the Fact Date field has a valid entry). Ultimately, when those exist, RootsMagic can compare eg. parents Marriage Date against child Birth Date and/or parent Death Date against child Birth Date, ETC.
So, for example, if a parent’s Marriage Date is entered as being after the child’s Birth Date, then that child will not be shown in the relative events for that couple OR if a child’s Marriage Date is after the parent’s Death Date, then the parent’s relative events will not show the marriage.
Yes. As kbens0n noted you need to have a Birth or Christen fact with a date. If the person is missing a birth/christen date, then “show relative events” doesn’t add anything
[edit: because there is no way for RM to calculate whether the events occurred within the person’s lifetime.]
Since it is a random instance, I would open a support ticket with RM.
@Sam2 The only way I could replicate the dau showing on dad BUT NOT on Mom’s event line was to remove all dates from her MOM–so as the guys are saying you need to add either a birth or marriage date to Mom-- if NOT sure just put abt or before the date
The daughter shows up in the Life Summary, even though she’s not in the Edit Person view of her mother.
There is a birth fact for the daughter, and an “abt” year for the date.
The wife also needs a birth or christen fact with a date (“abt” should work) for relative events to show. If that doesn’t work it may be time to open a support ticket.
Bingo. That was the problem. I faked a birth date for the mother, and the child details all appeared.
Many thanks to all who helped on this.
