Merge Place works basically the same in RM8 as in RM7: highlight what you want to keep, then add the others that will be merged into the first selection.
But, RM8 doesn’t handle it quite as smoothly. [Thanks to @thejerrybryan for pointing this out in the discussion section.]

The Place that is selected initially to be the ultimate correct Place should be presented about in the middle of the screen list, so that similar items that are above and below the target item in the list both show;

the target Place should not have a box indicating it could be selected to be merged into something else… those boxes should be reserved for items that could be selected to be merged in to the target.
