Is it possible to import from TMG using a .sqz file

I received a .sqz file from a relative and would like to import the data into Roots Magic. Has anybody done this. If so, I would appreciate some advice.
Thank you,

The sqz file is just a zip file.
When TMG creates it, it does not include index files so I’m not clear if RM will import from it- but it is certainly worth a try.
Just add “.zip” to the end of the file name, and then right click and select extract all.
You’ll get a folder with the uncompressed files. Point RM at it when importing.

Thanks! I did change the file to a .zip but RM-10 is looking for .jpc or .tmg files only. I am looking for a work around.

Not to jump to conclusions, but, after you changed the file extension to .zip did You extract the contents of the .zip file to a folder and then point RootsMagic to that location -or- just point at the .zip file itself (which RM will not recognize) ?

I opened the folders that were created looking for the right file extensions but did not find any that were recognized by the RM import tool

What other filename extensions were in there? Because those RM looks for are associated with a TMG backup. Was this just using Windows’ File Explorer and the folders that Windows presented to you -or- did You properly unarchive the contents of the .zip file using a utility specifically designed to “extract” the file contents (like 7-Zip or WinZip, etc.) ?

I see a lot of .bmp, .col, .dna, .tbr, rpt, .rst, acc, .dbf, .for just to mention a few.

I can’t be of any further help, but some filetypes explanation for those looks to be on DB Names (tmgtips.com)

The logical thing appears to be that you ask the sender to send you a GEDCOM file instead of the backup file. The next logical thing would be to find someone who still uses TMG and see if they can restore the file and send you a GEDCOM version. Simply put you aren’t going to import what you have directly into RM.

Spot on. I think one needs TMG to open the backup and regenerate the complete set of files. See

Hi,
I managed to get a old sqz backup file to load into RM 10. This is what I did -
I renamed the backup file by changing the sqz to zip
I extracted the zip file keeping the folders suggested.
I started RM and selected the Import file option
Then clicked on The_Master_Genealogist (TMG) option.
It then scanned my disk and found the PJC file in the folder I had extracted my backup into (Took 30/60 sec)
I clicked on this and it restored the DB with no issues.
