Hello,
I recently copied my Root Magic tree to a USB , I have since added new data to my computer Roots Magic tree. I’d like to know how to update / synchronize my Computer tree and USB trees .
Thanks, Kim
What is the name of the file on USB? Is it a database (filename.rmtree)? A backup (filename.rmbackup)? A GEDCOM (filename.ged)? A created website (filename.htm)?
Is the file on USB a subset (meaning wholly and only containing people that are also in the new data to be written)? Or are there folks in the old data that would need to be deleted, because they are no longer relevant members of the tree?
How did these folders and files wind up on a USB drive?
-Did you install RM10 and go to Settings>Folder settings then enter the USB drive as the path for saving your database?
-Or did you explicitly copy them from your computer’s main system storage drive to the USB?
-Transfer/synchronize is accomplished several ways in RM10.
-The straight forward best method is File>Backup which compresses the most up-to-date version of your data and stores it in a .RMBACKUP file with a name consisting of the database name and its creation date. These can be chosen later to restore your working database when mistaken operations result in unwanted change(s) (to resume where left off, for example).
That’s File>Restore from backup. Really… they are essentially just a .ZIP file compatible with (un)archiver programs like 7zip, WinZip, ETC. but with a reserved filename extension to identify them as RootsMagic database backups.
-This should be done regularly and they each become a dated “snapshot” of aggregate changes you make.
-Another avenue is File>Tools>Copy. That will copy and save the currently open database to a second folder location (eg. your USB drive). You could do this to overwrite the one shown in your screenshot).
-The third and most involved form of synchronize is File>Tools>Compare. This allows comparing data in the currently open database to another that you could choose to open. Then, it allows for showing differences and potentially overwriting or transferring selections between the two open files.

I opened my tree file on Roots Magic then clicked publish on left menu , then clicked on shareable USB Drives and copied my tree to USB, This also copied my Pictures , but was a separate file . Thanks for your help I’ll experiment with your suggestions , Thanks for your help
On the usb, create a new folder with the current month’s name. Then Copy your RM database to that folder.
That way you sill have the “older” database.
Ah, an outdated shareable… just re-run the same menu.
File>Copy would update the database, but not the pictures.
If you want your tree on a USB, wouldn’t it be a better option to use Rootsmagic-to-go? I use it every month to copy all my trees onto a USB if there have been changes (automatically detected), along with any new version of RM. Its quick and easy.
