I have RootsMagic 10 on my desktop computer, my laptop computer and now have a new tablet. Can I run RootsMagic on each one - will primarily use the desktop and tablet and use the To Go with each of them to make sure they are both updated equally? Thank you.
You did not say what OS was table nor computers. Android would not be possible even for ready only. If you use a network drive that on home network that could be one option. Cloud storage such as OneDrive is possible but not recommended by RM. Any cloud storage should make sure you suspend syncing while using RM. Then you would have to be sure to turn syncing back on before another device accessed it. This could get in risky issue of syncing and/or issue with versions between different computer – not sure who had done this with RM on different computers.
You could put your database on an external drive (rather then To Go) and when you switch computers just plug in to the one you are using.
For the tablet, you will need to put your database in Dropbox and install the app. Be aware that it is Read Only.
I run RM from my primary 17” laptop (it could be a desktop). I use this one exclusively for data entry and backup frequently on this computer as I am entering data. When I am finished for the day, I backup to a flash drive. Then occasionally I take the flash drive and restore to the second laptop. This 15” one is almost never used for primary data entry except if I am traveling. If traveling, when home I use the flash drive to copy back to the primary data entry computer. There is no confusion this way as to which data is the most recent.
I am sorry - I have a Fusion5 tablet - Windows 11, Microsoft 365. I also have a desktop computer, Windows 11, Microsoft 365.
I used to have a Dell Win 8 tablet that made it to Win 10 with RM 7 sharing databases over OneDrive with my laptop and a notebook computer. They also shared media files, spelling dictionary, the appdata folder. It involved virtual drives and folders to find common ground for RM settings so that the app looked and worked the same on all three.
Of course, I had to be careful to close a database on all other computers before working it on one of the three. At that time, it seemed that OneDrive knew that RM had a database open and automatically paused syncing. Now it doesn’t.
The tablet died as did my effort in developing my family tree so I no longer need or have that configuration.
Curious about that – if it was ONLY OneDrive – if RM / rm DB changed or both.
I guess if someone has issue with RM7 that would show it was OneDrive vs RM

I’ve had zero problems using RootsMagic 10 on multiple PCs with the database and the media store in a Dropbox Folder. I back up to a local PC regularly, but the working .rmgc file is online.
I follow the 321 rule
I do most of my work on a laptop on Ancestry so my ‘live’ database is there and I sync to roots magic so my ‘live’ RM database is also on that laptop. . Every day I perform a full RM backup, including media and then copy that backup to my NAS
The NAS has a weekly cloud backup. I clear out old RM backups after 3 months
I do a GED export once a month from RM and Ancestry separately so I have two completely separate backup basic trees, albeit with no media
So far it has meant I have lost no data even though I had a corrupted RM database a couple of times
When you do a Restore with Media, it doesn’t keep your original media folder structure (if you have one).
I backup my Media folder separately.
Useful to know
I do not have a media folder structure - too difficult to design/maintain
Mine is -
Genealogy\BMD
Genealogy\Cemetery
Genealogy\Census
Genealogy\Misc
Pretty self explanatory. Anything that doesn’t go into the first 3 get put into Misc.
Simple design and easy to maintain ![]()
I’ve been using Dropbox for a couple years. Set up a full file structure to share for the installations. I do much of my research on Ancestry and build that tree, updating to RM occasionally. My alternative installations are used mostly for reference rather than updating. I use one machine primarily to make changes in RM. The Dropbox configuration has been stable since I set it up.
I’ve used Dropbox for years to share all my business and personal files with multiple computers. So, it is installed on all my devices and used regularly. That could account for the stability.
I refuse to use OneDrive. It’s always trying to assume control of all files. I shut it off, but it does seem to creep back.
