Please show a person’s relationship on the Edit Person screen and on the FamilySearch Person Tools screen. I often wander from my main person to another screen and it would be very helpful to have the relationship available on those screens to track where I am in my tree. This would be especially helpful in the FamilySearch Person Tools to help me to decide whether or not to copy over parents and/or children of my RootMagic person from FamilySearch data. For example, I have no interest in copying over information from my 8th cousin’s spouse’s siblings. If I could see the relationship on the screen then I would know easily what to do.
good suggestion –
I suggested this before before it did not gain much interest
Totally agree, would be very helpful. And can we also have the Webhints icons/bulbs showing on the Edit Person screen too. I’ve requested this last one before.
I think that would be very helpful
Confirm requests have been reported to development.
I use the Reference No. fact to show how I am related to a person. W1C1R is my Weatherwax first cousin once removed. I add a dash to the relationship for spouses. Then I know I don’t want to continue up that line.
The FamilySearch Person Tools screen displays the assigned color codes, so I use that to guide me if the person is someone I want to update or too far off my primary family to need their info.
This question came up when I met with my five grand and great-grandchildren interested in continuing using RootsMagic after I am gone (I am 95), l will share some of their “young generation” insight later as they were working separately and had some suggestions as we continue to find the best way to carry on RootsMagic into the future (I am uncertain the best way or how to save all the information once I stop using my computer).
Two of them had the same idea about relationships. They created a new fact for their own relationship and gave it a sort date code of “1” so it appears right after the first box. They did this for the same reason - if they were talking to others in the family the question comes up as to their relationship and this way they can say “This is my first cousin once removed” then figure theirs out. It looked so neat that I am doing the same thing as I add new people and review older ones.
The only bummer, in their words, is that while the handbook and videos talk about using the sort date code, nothing, including the searches, allows a report by this code to confirm it has been set to “1”. They can use the new fact in reports, but wanted to check it out themselves.
All five used some new facts and used the sort date code for some information they wanted, including where they got the initial person (familysearch, grandpa, etc.) and a handy way to look up the families the person belonged to as we have multiple families with the same names, so they use something like “Ketner-Conrad” to distinguish from another Ketner branch “Ketner-Hunter”. Yes, there are other ways to see this, but they gave a new fact called ‘family’ a low sort date code so they could quickly see it.
They would like to be able to sort or search or print on sort date just as they can on proof or color code. Meantime, we are having a good time!
