Has Something Changed in the Forum Software?

Before today, when I was typing in a message to this forum on the left side of the screen, I could also see on the right side of the screen what the message ultimately was going to look like after I posted it. That right side view of what the message is really going to look like is gone. Is it just me? I have tried it with multiple browsers, and I get the same issue with all browsers. I have clicked every icon I can find on the forum screen to try to find some option I can change, but I have had no success.

It’s especially troublesome when I post an image because without that right side of the screen view of my message, I can’t see what the image is going to look like in the context of the rest of my message.

You’re right. There is no longer the preview pane to see what it will look like when published.

  1. Is that because the edit form is now WYSIWYG?

  2. This numbered list is now that way.

  4. Yup - the editor is WYSIWYG so no need for a preview pane.

I noticed that early today and like you I also don’t care for it–not only as it concerns pictures BUT I was able to see typos better in the preview pane

My first reaction is that it is an improvement over the previous editor. Whatx the problem with typos?

image-seems to spellcheck well.
And pasting screenshots in works great. Is there an issue with large images? Images can be scaled up or down. I guess a large one could be scaled down temporarily to allow more space for text and then scaled up for posting.

There’s none of that markdown code to mess with. [1]And you can add footnotes!

  1. This is a footnote ā†©ļøŽ

Nothing wrong with typos as long as you can figure out what they meant–most times I can BUT sometimes it’s like me trying to read a text message from my g-niece–I have no idea what she is trying to say…

as for pictures, what was in the original before sent was really small and then huge after posted..

BUT did notice it gives you the option to build a poll–interesting

yeah - I noticed a glitch the other day and then now nothing – I thought it might have been my browser

I inspected the page source and identified the Discourse version that RootsMagic is running: 3.5.0.beta.9

Then I went searching for changelog information etc. The Discourse organization has ongoing work on changing their composer. You can read more in this announcement on meta.discourse.org …

So I’m sure that RM probably did a software update in the last 24 hours and got upgraded from some older version that was pre-composer-changes.

Great sleuthing! Here’s a follow-on announcement:

For those who prefer the former Markdown editor, you can readily switch to it via the top left icon in the menu bar. And switch back.

I’m not sure that it is the same Markdown editor as we had previously so you may encounter some differences.

You can switch back to the classic ā€œComposerā€ by clicking on the control at the top left. And switch back again.

Thank ya :blush:Natural extension of my penchant for searching out obscure genealogical records  .

I think the composer toggle switch, using just an ā€˜A’, isn’t going to be clear for most people. Good on ya for pointing it out. I hope the Discord folks change that. Maybe instead of an ā€˜A’ they could change it to a notepad icon or something.

Once we all get used to it I’m sure the newer Composer style will be just fine.

Was wanting to upload a screen recording tonight BUT can’t find anyway to do it–so if still possible, please let me know how to do this….

If drag’n’drop does not work (did it before for video?), then upload to a web host and paste the URL.

By ā€˜screen recording’, do you mean a GIF like this? …

RootsMagic_B5pUSEwzh2

If so, then I just used the ā€˜Upload’ icon in the editor [ image ] to pick a file from my local PC hard drive.

This forum has never supported direct upload of videos. I’m pretty sure it’s a decision based upon the economic costs of hosting large files.

Thanks all-- jerry’s little demo in this post was what i was talking abt

Since a drag and drop did NOT work, when I want to upload one, I will do as Tom said
and upload to a web host and paste the URL.

I use screencast.com It is not a free site, but there definitely are free sites for this purpose. When I publish to screencast.com, it gives me back a URL I can paste into messages on this forum, or really to anywhere. For example, I could email the URL to somebody.

If it’s a screen capture instead of a video, then this forum supports simply pasting the screen capture into the message I am composing. I don’t even have to save the image to a file on my computer at all. I just do a Ctrl+v to paste. A right click and then paste would do as well.
