Feature request - reports should have living on/off toggle

When i went to print some reports (box, ancestry, decendants), there was no option to hide the people who are still living to protect their security. There would be an option to toggle on/off what data to be included in the report (Living…on/off) and (Living…annonymous). The Living=off would turn off reporting of all living persons. The Living=annonymous, would only list a child and gender, but nothing else). Thank you.

That really is not practical for many reports. Things such as Box would have really awkward holes in it. Descendant reports are based in standardized reports and as such would also have some really awkward holes, and most likely would not print some of the people you really wish to print given how they attach to the tree.

You do have some control over what prints in some places but it involves editing each fact that you do not want published. Most facts have the option to not include them when exporting to GEDCOM, printing Family Group Sheets or Narrative reports and some other options. However that will cause problems when printing deceased people also.

one suggestion – create groups for such criteria – then the reports would only including non-living etc. If you create a group with the criteria you need that should accomplish what your want. (not sure if all reports will do this if using starting person.)

Export a GEDCOM file to exclude Living and use that as a temporary database to print your charts. Keep in mind if the Living are needed between generations the line will stop before them. Otherwise you could select the privacy option in GEDCOM to make their name Living.

criteria might be something like this – select starting person (and what descendants to include)

then De- Select Living

that will produce a group of people only “Dead” and descendant of the starting person – you can get much more complicated if needed – then use that group in custom report

might look like this

Thank you for your reply, but that won’t work.

The feature I’m suggesting would be available in ALL reports with Descendants. it would have an option to delesect all living persons without having to know each of their names and manually unselect them.

I’m trying to print a report of all “DESCENDANTS” " with photos", but to no include living people.

I am using version 9.1.6.0 (29 May 2024). Those options are not available the Descendant reports.

For these reports I get the following results:

  1. Box Chart - You can only select the Start Person. And then Descendants or Ancestors, and number of generations.

  2. Descendant Chart - You can only select the Start Person and number of generations. There is no option to “unselect by field values”.

  3. Custom Report - Include options are: “Everyone” or select from a list" in which case you would have to know the names of all descendants to select them.

  4. Individual Report (gives no photos) - Include options are: “Everyone” or select from a list" in which case you would have to know the names of all descendants to select them.

Thank you,

Thank you for the reply. I would not be able to do it this way because some of this is distant family so I’m not sure who is living or not. And to manually select each person would be very difficult. But thank you.

even in 9.1.6 you can make a group of Living or non Living but not with the advanced Rule Criteria available in 10.0+.

What you could then do – is to export to WORD and the redact the names etc in word or other Word Processing software (unless you have an Adobe Pro License – that would be another option). The Word option so be fairly easy but you would need to redo each time you redid the reports.

A 3rd option would be external software such as website tools or something Like Charting Companion (do not recall if Living / non living is option for which charts as I never needed to)

You can make a Simple group using Mark, Living people or Deceased people. If you use the Rules group select criteria and then select the Living flag and if it’s True or False.
