hello. I am new to RootsMagic. Getting ready to import a ‘practice’ run of my familySearch tree into RootsMagic10 essentials. I have no data in RM10 yet. There are a few ‘restricted’ sources from famSearch on a family member. Will these sources come over in the import? Will they still be ‘restricted’? Or do they dissolve in the process? please & thank you. (i am waiting on famSearch to decide on which to remove or keep)
I assume that by “restricted sources” you’re actually referring to the image restrictions? Such that, when you click on the a blurred image, you get a dialog like this? …
Since I’ve never downloaded from FamilySearch, I did an experimental download on an ancestor that had such an image restriction. I used just the basic download settings, downloading 4 generations starting from me.
What I found was that RM only downloads the people and the events, but doesn’t create any “Sources” and also doesn’t download any media, restricted or otherwise. Unless my experience was somehow atypical then you too won’t get any media. Seems to just be a way to quickly build the framework of a tree, while leaving the fleshing out (sources, media, etc) to the user.
Kimberly. Thank you so MUCH! I have been trying to do the same test, but I cannot get RootsMagic10 Essentials to work. It will not create a new tree. So your experiment was very helpful to me! I will just purchase the full version & add all the sources myself. Lots of fun heading my way.
On the FamilySearch Person Tools screen there is a Sources tab. This is where you would go to add FamilySearch sources to RM. It will not include images.

. Yeah, the Essentials is pretty limited. More for giving you a test drive around the block than trying to make it your daily driver.
Wow! thank you, rzamor1 !!! Once I get RootsMagic10 installed, I will get to work on this. I’m thrilled to know that some if not most of the sources will come over… whew. I appreciate the input from both of you! I look forward to helping other newbies as I get started on this transfer!
