Is there a way to display how many of something - in this case “Pairs” to be reviewed before merging.
Or, a count of People listed separately in a Tree
More context - I have been “gifted” an Ancestry file with about 17,000 people listed. And I suspect with as many as half are duplicates, triplicates and I’ve even located a quadruplicates.
Where can I after doing any sort of merge see how many entries/name/people remain in a particular tree.
On the top right corner of any view are two icons, one looks like a painter’s pallet and the other looks light a paint roller. The left one is the Command Pallet.
In the people view there is a wrench crossed with a screwdriver to represent TOOLS. Right click and select “Count Trees” From HELP
My comment does not address the count, but I have a caution before you begin.
I suspect you will find this “gift” a pain when you start merging the duplicates. If the duplicate entries are very similar, they may merge in an automatic merge. More likely you will need to merge most of the pairs manually. Think several times if you plan to add these names in a large group to your primary database. Even slight differences in spellings, dates, location, etc. prevent automatic merging.
You might want to standardize the format of the place names/locations in that gift database before you start the merging.
The count is more a matter of curiosity - but nothing sidetracks one than unsatisfied curiosity.
There is no might about it, standardizing within the gift is the immediate goal.
As I mentioned elsewhere I so suspect at least 1/2 to 2/3 are likely duplicates, and I understand that little details will affect the merge function(s)
The only good news may be that the “gift” will be the basis for that line of the family.
I have been doing a bit of experimenting with smaller trees from my personal ancestry account to get a better understanding of how things work.
I am very new to Roots Magic and my last venture in Genealogy included the NY Public Library and microfiche, plus some other data base work, so going slowly and thinking long and hard before doing anything major.
That said, I am so pleased with so many helpful features already there -
