I’m trying to Split my Family tree into a Paternal and Maternal tree, however when I copy all my Fathers Ancestors and Descendants and My Mothers Ancestors and Descendants the Record counts are not adding up? When I copy All people in database I get a count of 6,178, but when I separate my Maternal and Paternal with Copy all Ancestors and Descendants I get totals of 1,227+1,761 a total of 2,988? I’m also trying to guess at possible orphan records in my database, but the totals are not close. I don’t want to lose any records when I split my tree into Maternal and Paternal… Any suggestions how I can accomplish this?
Don’t guess. Run the Tools > Count Trees tool which may be found under the wrench icon in the upper right hand corner of any of the main people views such as Family View or Pedigree View.
another option is to keep your original database, copy it twice (name one Mom, one Dad) then in Mom delete Dad’s side - in Dad delete Mom’s side
You may other other people in other trees in your database. Run Count Trees and see if you have people there.
Keep in mind that there is a fairly good chance for over laps on both sides depending on # of generations etc.
Those over laps you likely want to maintain on both sides
@Tsehscm --as @thejerrybryan said check your count trees— also when you say there are 6,178 people in your database, I am assuming you are looking at the total in the enhanced list and NOT THE LAST RIN NUMBER USED-- for example I have 1394 people in a database BUT the last RIN # used was 4917— difference being I had people in the database that I have deleted ( mainly due to combining 2 unrelated databases BUT also deleting others along the way)…
Actually I kind of agree with @MadDog – that in the long run, it MIGHT just be easier to make 2 copies of your database and delete Mom’s side out of one and Dad’s side out of the other—JUST BE DANG SURE WHICH DATABASE YOU ARE DELETING IN as it is very easy to get distracted and delete IN THE WRONG DATABASE!!! As I don’t know if this has been fixed in RM 10, you may or may not get an access violation/ argument out of range error–if so, just close down RM , reopen and you are good to go for a while again (somewhere between 650-1200 clicks)…
So I did some checking on different ways to drop n drag to split Dad’s line–will note here that my Dad’s line has always been separate from Mom’s BUT I have a little of Mom’s ancestors and abt 50 unrelated people in this file–so basically getting rid of the extra people and your results may differ slightly…
My count trees say Dad’s has 498 people…
1st method---- did dad ancestors and then descendants and spouses–10 generations each
copied 73 / 498
Results
none of Mom’s ancestors-- did get all brother-in-law and sis–in-laws and spouses of nieces and nephews —none of dad’s siblings ( which means none of his nieces and nephews etc) or any siblings for any generation–on this one you get both your grandpa and grandma’s ancestors-- father and mother line BUT again no siblings for any of these lines–WHICH IN A TREE YOUR SIZE CAN ACCOUNT FOR QUITE A FEW YOU ARE MISSING!!! This seems to be a CLEAN import with no major problems found–see next post…
2nd method
let me select people from a list – when the list opens, I highlight and check person and then select Ancestors and collateral lines under Mark—
copied 498/498
Results— this one has Mom’s parents–got bro-in-laws and sis-in-laws and their kids and spouses as well as all the siblings of the ancestors, their kids and spouses- and the parents of the spouses ( 1 generation only) and all their kids and spouses and their descendants (as many generations of descendants as you have listed)—seems to be
a clean import…
BEFORE YOU START MAKE SURE TO BACK-UP your database and periodically back-up as you work on it…
3rd method
dad ancestors and their descendants–
copied 426/498
Results
didn’t get Mom’s parents or ancestors BUT see note below
got bro-in-laws and sis-in-laws and their kids and spouses as well as all the siblings of the ancestors, their kids and spouses–what you don’t get is the parents of any of the spouses/ in-laws that were NOT direct line…
NOT A CLEAN IMPORT----BIG PROBLEM!
note – my dad and his brother married Mom and her sister–so my aunt and uncle and their lines descend from the same ancestors— in this database, my Mom and her sister are listed as the daughter of KRESGE AND MY BROTHER BOB!!! Kresge would be the spouse of my grandmother’s 1C1R…
Their correct parents ( listed in the original database) are
Method 4
DAD AND EVERYBODY IN SAME TREE
copied 499/498-- can’t figure out who the extra person is UNLESS IT IS MY NEPHEW’S WIFE-- see problem
Results
this one has mother’s parents–got bro-in-laws and sis-in-laws and their kids and spouses as well as all the siblings of the ancestors, their kids and spouses- and the parents of the spouses (1 generation only) and all their kids and spouses and their descendants (as many generations of descendants as you have listed)…
NOT A CLEAN IMPORT----BIG PROBLEM!
I have my nephew and his dau listed but NOT his wife (at the moment)-- in the new database his wife now has 12 SPOUSES-- her hubby, my brother, my niece, my cousin etc…
BUT she is NOT even listed in the original database
Now @rzamor1 I know this should NOT be happening --it’s like the drop n drag doesn’t like kids without parents or parents without spouses — it’s NOT a fluke or user error Because I’ve made several database and it has happened----BUT each time is different–one time my cousin ( who has no spouses or kids) and my grandpa’s brother (who died at birth) were the parents of Mom and her sister ( cousin’s Mom)—another time it was my brother and grandma’s uncle—other times the spouse of the g-g aunts ( brothers) were the kids of a random couple born 100 years after the brothers…
