Since updating to the latest and greatest V11.2 I can no longer connect to Family Search (FS) or connect new people to those that are in FS. Nor will the address that RM 11.2 generates connect to FS in a new window so insofar as I can see RM11.2 is broken. Anyway to get around this?
Since it works for me (and likely most everyone else)… what have You tried? Did You…
- close RM out completely and restart?
- close all your browser windows out and then attempt using Family Search Central to login?
- reboot your computer and then retry?
Windows or Mac? Are there any error messages? Anything to screenshot in the program screens or browser window when it fails to connect, that you could share here?
Yes I have done all of those things plus a lot more. It eventually pops up a small error window that says “Family Search Sign In Required” but it never brings up a sign in page. I am already signed into FS and have several FS pages open at this time. I copy the address in the blank window that it pops up and try that in a new browser window and it pops up the exact same blank window.
I can still jump from RM11.2 to a person’s profile (that it was connected to prior to this latest update) in FS but I cannot connect any new person in RM11.2 to the same person in FS.
This is the address that it is giving me and trying to connect to:
I think that I have narrowed this issue down to the Family Search Central because I can no longer access it. If I click on it all I get is the same blank screen with the same useless address in the address bar. I need to delete whatever has happened there but cannot access it. I can click on the Ancestry Tree Share button and it pops up a window with info that I am signed-in to ancestry. I cannot alter the Family Search login in any manner and it is messed up since the installation of the last update.
How can I delete/alter the Family Search login info in RM11.2?
Unfortunately, those use two different authorizations for separately available functions. The one you’re logged into is a “front-facing” website with its browser capabilities and the basic hints, etc. while the other utilizes the browser login screen ONLY to get FamilySearch API (Applications Program Interface) authorization privileges granted to the RootsMagic program itself…which then provides it with separate access to additional “back-end” data and functionality offerings within FamilySearch Central realm.
As a registered user, you should request support:
Submit a request – RootsMagic Support
Both pop up the exact same useless page with the exact same useless address.
Thanks.
You might want to try changing you default browser.(or confirm the same browser is being used) The purpose of the 2fa is confirm user but sometimes appears “useless”.
What does the FSC screen show? (Example below)
also do they show green?

Have you tried logging out of FamilySearch in the RM interface–
and closing out of FamilySearch in your browser-- clear the cache on your browser…
then close out RM completely-- maybe even reboot your computer-- open RM and run all the tools again-- CHECK YOUR SETTINGS–Under Web hints make sure Web Hints and Family Search are checked–under General make sure enable family Search support is checked-- note I have none of them checked at one point and I was still able to connect to Family search.. If you change any settings Log out of RM again making sure to back up your database
then try again to connect to Family Search BY using the icon at the bottom–IF THAT DOESN’T WORK --TRY FamilySearch central under Publish..
Still NOT working try a different browser – then try restore your Backup file…
I would recommend against using restore – that would be a final hail mary resort and would only do if directed by support. If you have a 2nd computer – I might try that as it could be related to a program setting vs database itself.
If the login page is not loading I would clear the browser cache. Check that the security software is not interferring. Also make sure you have the latest version of the browser software.
if I had to bet – I would say the browser opening form within RM (default) is not the same you are logged into otherwise (unless you are using some kind of browser extension or profile)
It had nothing to do with my browser or my RM11.2 it was either FS or my ISP (Spectrum) but suddenly after a week or more it is working.
Thanks for the suggestions.
possible issue FS - but ISP would not seem to explain how would connect one way on the computer and not the other unless you have some sort of protection enable and it thinks its protecting you
I have no clue why it has started working but it is working very nicely with any of the different browsers that I use with absolutely no hiccups. I appreciate all the recommendations. The only protection on my system is Windows Defender which has always been kept up-to-date. As I mentioned, I could NOT connect to Family Search at all yesterday afternoon even when NOT going through RM11.2. I assumed that FS was having issues again, like they appear to do on occasion.
But at this moment in time things are working exactly as they used to and I am happy with that.
yes agreed it sound like FS server issues were to blame in that case.
this is what confused me.
I am confused as well but it is working fine now for some oddball reason. I have no clue.
its working now but yeah agreed would be nice to know the previous issue
I wish that I knew what happened.
It was working fine then after the update it stopped working.
I put up with that for a while (about a week or so) until I added a few people and wanted to link them to the FS profiles and couldn’t so then I started looking for an answer as to the cause.
I went through numerous tries to correct the issue and got no where. Every suggestion that I was given was something that I had already tried.
I even went into the privacy & security settings and specifically gave permission for FS and still nothing.
I copied the link that RM was giving the browser and just opened a browser window and pasted it into the address bar in both of the browsers that are on my machine and could not connect using that link.
I did screen shots of the windows/error message that I was getting and sent them to RM Support.
By the end of the day Sunday (I think it was) I could NOT connect to FS at all with either of my browsers.
Yesterday afternoon I received a response from RM Support I was reading it and just for grins I tried connecting through RM again and it worked.
Personally, I cannot imagine anything that my ISP (Spectrum) could/would have done to prevent the connection.
I have experienced similar issues with FS in the past and therefore I am making an assumption that something between me and FS was the issue.
Right now my connection to FS zips where in days prior to this event I had seen a very large and very noticeable slowing down in making the connection and passing data back and forth.
out of curiosity – have you been making or syncing changes with ANCESTRY tree share also – not sure if that would cause it but something to take note of
No. I never connect my machine to Ancestry. Always had too much “garbage” coming from there so I deleted my family tree from there several years ago. The only on-line genealogy service that I actually connect to is FS. I only use that for updating a profile on FS from my machine or to download specific info from FS to my machine when I have done an on-line update to it and haven’t gotten the same info on my personal machine.
(This was written last night…20 May 2026) Right after I sent you that last message and I attempted to connect to FS it would NOT connect. This is getting a bit ridiculous. I cannot connect to FS with my RM11.2 and it gives the exact same message and exact same link and the exact same error saying that I need to sign into FS. At this moment I can sign into FS from a new browser window but not connect via RM11.2 .
(…and now this morning 21 May 2026) I have changed absolutely nothing on my system nor altered anything in my connection but it connects immediately. So what is going on do you think? This is a bit crazy. Is there any possibility that it can be my router/modem/etc? I have a Spectrum wireless but I use the wired connection between my system and it. I can’t think of any way that could be the problem but at this point I am grasping at straws,
